"It was all fake. I never cared about you."
"Oh. Well, I guess it's goodbye then. It was nice when you pretended for me." Makoto forced a smile over the phone. He poorly hid the strain in his voice as he tried not to cry in front of Haru after finding out the truth.
Makoto waited for the call to be ended by Haru. He couldn't move. Not after hearing those words. At some point, the phone slipped from his grip, yet his body remained locked in the same position for what felt like an eternity. Tears were already slipping down his face silently, his world completely shattered.
All those days they spent together. Weeks, months, years; all of it was a lie.
Makoto thawed from his position, sobs shaking his frame as he clutched at his pillow. Haru was the source of his strength when things got too hard or when Uni left him drained and lonely. "Why....Haru?"
Small whines and whimpers came out every now and then as Makoto cried until he was numb. Once he reached his limit, all of his emotions fled him, shock settling in once again. His eyes were irritated from crying so hard and his breathing hitched every now and then until it eventually became even again as he stared at the wall.
He briefly wondered if the words Haru had spoken to him had just been a dream. Hope fluttered in his heart for a moment, but as he turned over to reach for his phone, he realized that it was in pieces on the ground. The force of the fall had released the battery.
His eyes glazed over. He wanted to hear Haru's voice again, telling him that those words were the lie, not their life together.
Makoto clawed at the pillow more, curling up until he was at the limit of comfort. Everything he loved, every memory was tainted with the lie Haru lived.
Fresh tears escaped Makoto's eyes once more as he closed them. It felt like there was a gaping hole where Haru had ripped out his heart.
All that was left was for Makoto was to adjust to this pain. It wasn't going to go away soon. It would probably stay with him the rest of his life.
