Apple, and it's team of interface designers with keen sense of detail, has done it again!

Not long ago, even the tiniest of details were lost in the transition from iOS6 to 7.
Migrating Design to iOS7
Snag My Spot is our location-based list app that has maintained a small but strong following over the past few years. As iOS has evolved, so has our app. Under iOS6 the app was designed around the then-popular skeuomorphic design aesthetic.
When iOS7 launched, this cause some problems. First, some of the textured UI elements were no longer positioned correctly, due to the status bar now a styled part of the app UI. Secondly, the app looked immediately out of date.
To move over to iOS 7 without making any significant changes to the app presentation, the process was simple. Simplify and flatten. We also took the opportunity to brighten up the design a bit.
Instead of removing the existing textures, we instead decided to blur them to match Apple's popular iOS7 overlay affect.
We also removed the shadows off of all the UI elements, including updating the buttons to simple flat icons.
We were already using a tall skinny font in the UI, but we now expanded the use of the font to standard iOS interface objects, like the title bar and left hand menu.
Finally, we removed some excess iconography -- keeping it simple! We also added some additional swipe animation effects. One important aspect of iOS7 is that everything in the UI should flow.
With those few changes, Snag My Spot kept its basic look while shedding its 'outdated' skeuomorphism.

Adding a custom selected UITabBarItem image in iOS7
It's a little tricky to have the new UITabBarItem filled-in image style shown in the current iOS7 apps.
Xcode Storyboard doesn't provide you with a field to add a highlighted image in the Attributes inspector. So you will need to use the following code inside your AppDelegate.m : didFinishLaunchingWithOption.
UITabBarController *tabBarController = (UITabBarController *)self.window.rootViewController; UITabBar *tabBar = tabBarController.tabBar; UITabBarItem *tabBarItem1 = [tabBar.items objectAtIndex:0]; UITabBarItem *tabBarItem2 = [tabBar.items objectAtIndex:1]; UITabBarItem *tabBarItem3 = [tabBar.items objectAtIndex:2]; UITabBarItem *tabBarItem4 = [tabBar.items objectAtIndex:3]; tabBarItem1.selectedImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"iconActionSelected"]; tabBarItem2.selectedImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"iconEmotionSelected"]; tabBarItem3.selectedImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"iconHereIAmSelected"]; tabBarItem4.selectedImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@"iconJumboSelected"]; return YES;
To learn how to design custom bar icons, see Bar Button Icons.
We have amazing retina displays capable of showing more detail per square inch than anything in history, and we use them to show vast spaces of pure white with an occasional gradient or single colored word.
"... There are literally no details whatsoever to benefit from retina except very crisp text. Even rounded corners, which could finally look truly curved, have been replaced by sharp corners.
Now, when our devices could finally look the most alive, the most tactile and interactive, the most real and inviting ever, we have completely detached and disassociated them from anything our brains instinctively recognize and want to look at or touch."

is it just me or is tumblr's "updated design" basically just the application of the design/look of iOS7 to tumblr...?
