Made an unusual road kill discovery this morning as we made our way out to Adel for a doctor's appointment. I swore it was an armadillo and Jason just thought I was a weirdo for getting all excited. When we swung by the poor critter was still there and definitely was a nine banded armadillo. Dont know if it was a pet or fell off a truck, or a very motivated dillo. Also unusual considering this was right in the middle of a city highway. For those who arent Iowa natives, armadillos of any kind are not natives. The closest sighting is generally the Missouri border, a few hundred miles south, and even that's rare since they are southern, warmer climate animals. This one wouldnt have survived the winter here. Out at the family farm tonight and walking around with Koda. Decided Id check on whether our barn owl friend was around or not. Came across a pellet and decided to climb the loft to see if there were feathers. As I climbed our feathered friend took off out a hole in the roof. I didnt expect to see feathers let alone a beautiful male barn owl. Note to self, dont climb into the loft for a while. I can see why he is here though, the large swath of grass pasture and alfalfa field houses all kinds of prey for him. Look who I found trying frantically to cross the creek in Ledges today. Thankfully I glanced down, I was on the road walking and nearly stepped on him. I helped him across and snapped a photo after.
