Just an FYI to all my fellow Brits.
On Friday the Investigatory Powers Bill, also known as the Snooper’s Charter comes into enforcement. All companies are required to retain one year of your internet history and communications data indiscriminately. You don’t have to be suspected of a crime for your data to be turned over to the government. It could be picked up in mass scoopings-up of data; your social media conversations de-encrypted, your internet history examined, all of it.
I really wanted to make sure people were made aware of this unprecedented legislation. The EU court ruling has not affected the process, it just makes it more likely to be shot down later in our own courts. They recieve the base domain of the websites you visit - i.e. Facebook.com. This includes Tumblr domains - but they will see the whole thing. If you visit my tumblr they will be able to see that you visited magnificomichielin.tumblr.com, when you did it, and for how long.
I didn’t want this to go on behind people’s backs. Our trust in the state has been diminished, as has the state’s trust in us. It’s only right that people know what is being done.
