I set up a very shonky camera rig this afternoon and time lapse filmed the start of a painting on my iPhone until the natural light went away. It turned out better than expected! These days there are important vertical venues including Instagram. Nevertheless, horizontal is the way to go if you plan to exhibit your videos on YouTube, on television, and in movie theaters. Vertical video shown in those places end up with black bars that fill the space you didn’t use. Horizontal is also more “natural.” Our eyes are side-by-side, the better to take in a world that spreads out before us as a wide landscape.
