IMS Nagpur 2025 — What Made the 48 IIM Selection Batch Different
Forty-eight. When I first heard that number, I thought it was a typo. In 2025, 48 students from IMS Nagpur received IIM calls after cracking IPMAT. For context: roughly 40,000 students appear for IPMAT Indore every year. Only 818 clear the sectional cutoffs. That's barely 2% of all test-takers making it to the interview stage — and 48 of them, nearly 6% of the entire national PI pool, came from one coaching centre in Dharampeth, Nagpur. I went digging. Spoke to students. Asked around in Nagpur's education circles. What I found wasn't just impressive — it was instructive. This is the story of what happened inside IMS Nagpur's 2024-25 batch that most IPMAT aspirants never hear about.
First — The Numbers That Make 48 Feel Real
What the 2025 Batch Did Differently
They Started in Class 11 — Not Class 12 Most of the 48 students joined IMS Nagpur in Class 11 — a full 12-14 months before the May 2025 exam. The QA Short Answer section tests Class 11/12 Higher Mathematics: Functions, Permutation & Combination, Probability, Sequences & Series, Trigonometry. These are not concepts you cram in 2 months. Students who joined in Class 11 built these from the foundation up. Students who joined in Class 12 consistently struggled with QA SA because there simply wasn't enough time.
They Took Every Mock Like It Was the Real Exam Not phone nearby. Not pausing when they felt like it. Every mock: specific start time, phone off, full 120 minutes, no interruptions. More importantly — they spent 90-120 minutes analysing every mock after it ended. The Post-Mock Analysis Ritual (What Made the Difference)
Reviewed every wrong answer: knowledge gap? calculation error? time management?
Tracked sectional performance against the actual cutoffs — not just the total score
Identified error patterns: "I consistently misread Para Jumble options — this is a reading speed issue"
Adjusted next week's study plan based on that analysis
Over 50 mocks, this compound effect is enormous
They Never Skipped the QA Short Answer Section The most common IPMAT mistake: treating QA SA as secondary because it comes last and has no negative marking. The 2025 IMS batch understood the strategic truth — with no negative marking, every attempt is a potential +4. Even a partially-solved question where you make an intelligent guess gives you a real shot. They targeted 8-10 correct SA answers (32-40 marks) — well above the 24-mark cutoff.
Verbal Ability Was Treated as a Technical Skill, Not a Talent The biggest misconception about IPMAT VA: 'either you're good at English or you're not.' Wrong. The 2025 batch was taught specific techniques — RC question type identification before reading options, Para Jumble mandatory-first-sentence method, the 12 most-tested Grammar rules in IPMAT. By September 2024, most students were consistently above 110 in VA mock sections. The actual cutoff of 112 felt comfortable, not desperate.
