Ecology is a relatively recent science. The term was coined in 1866, by the German biologist Ernst Haeckal, barely 30 years after Darwin’s famous travels aboard the HMS Beagle. Ecology, like all sciences, is a product of its social world, but especially. But given its interest in complex, interactive systems, the science of ecology derived its systems of knowledge as much from politics, theories of international relations, and ethical philosophy as from its big sister biology.

Trio of Weaver Zines featured in the Institute of Queer Ecology: Towards a Common Survival: Love You’ll Think Weird, The Ways Trees Hold Each Other, Abysmal Glitters.

The Institute of Queer Ecology (IQECO) was founded, out of necessity, as an act of resistance. It is an institute of hope and relentless optimism towards a utopian ideal, asking only for a place in this world for organisms of every kingdom, gender, and sexuality. IQECO evolved in the tidepool of fear and urgency that followed the 2016 election. In the past 17 months, the Trump administration has pulled out of the Paris Climate Accord, restricted the rights of transgender inmates, appointed a climate science denier to the helm of the EPA, quietly removed the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, and made countless (relentless) other steps towards the erasure of environmental and LGBTQ+ concerns. The question at hand now is simply: How Do We Survive?

Common Survival manifests as a multiformat publication, contained within an 11 x 17 x 5 inch box. The 33 included projects appear as texts, zines, screen prints, photographs, sculptural objects, poems, video, audio recordings and other hybridized modes of research display.

When Earth is flooded, how will you survive? virtuellestheater provides the first issue of IQECO magazine with useful tools and knowledge to survive extinction by becoming an octopus-human hybrid: The Ultimate Octopus Sapiens Kit for Earthly Survival.The video „How to Become an Octopus" is part of the kit. it was produced exclusively for this publication and is derived from virtuellestheater’s 2017 performance „The AE - Guidance for an Extreme Present“. The video is based on the assumption that only new symbiotic bonds and alliances between all life forms will ensure common survival for future generations. virtuellestheater believes that these alliances must cut across species, habitats and genders. Using language and story-telling as means of creating an alternate (yet thinkable) reality, the kit combines artistic fantasy with scientific possibilities in the form of virtual inter-species hybridization.
