She also was a Yankton Dakota writer and activist who spoke out against Native abuse and women's inequality. Her essay, "Why I Am A Pagan," feels like it could have been written yesterday, and really resonates with me, personally.
She was such an intelligent writer and thinker who did so much in her relatively short life (died 1938 at 61). I encourage all to learn more about her and take some time to savor Nature today!
i’m just running my mouth but sometimes i wish i was born vegetarian or vegan cuz sometimes i do not wanna eat meat and i think being born into that lifestyle would make it much easier not to crave it (especiallyyyyyy before my period oh god). i be thinking like “wow that shit really used to be alive”… but i also love cake and ice cream and alfredo pasta. maybe pescatarian (cuz i think of seafood more as bugs of the sea) or vegetarian cuz i think they still eat eggs n shit (??) but full on vegan i feel like i couldn’t do.
plus, i had a conversation with a friend some time ago about eating dogs and cats vs other animals (i had seen a man online shaming people for eating dogs) and i was like “there’s really no difference between a dog and a chicken. meat is meat?” and people like to say “but you domesticate dogs” but what does that have to do with the fact that it’s meat? you know what i’m sayin? 😭
and also people are also like “why do y’all act like these animals have a family to go home to? it’s not that serious” first of all, god forbid people have a little fucking empathy, shit 🤨 i would hate to be a pig tryna be all muddy and fucking disgusting and then i get put in a house, walking around in my own shit, cramped up with other pigs then boom! i’m bacon.

transgenderism, like all emanations of the patriarchal ideological system, imagines a metaphysical human self that is separate, and therefore severable, from the lowly animal body. the self may reside within the body, but it is not the body, and relations between the two are hostile: the self is stymied by the body, endangered by it, constricted, degraded. for the transgenderist, that human self, once conceptualized as the soul, then as the mind, is revised for the times to become an individual’s “gender identity,” an ethereal pink or blue essence that drifts about within the blank space of the body it tenants, determining personality, likes and dislikes, mannerisms, behavioral patterns, wardrobe preferences, etc. the body is nought but a vessel for the self and a poor one at that, Plato’s prison or tomb; it is an ill-fitted garment of meat which grossly misrepresents the self’s true nature. for example: the body is male, while the self within is feminine. transgenderism posits that a feminine self is owed a female body, and its solution to the discomfiting mismatch is mind over matter: the material, animal, biological body must be remodeled for the gratification of the mind; flesh is recast in the mind’s image – which is a cultural image, and since our culture is manmade and male-dominated, the vision the mind’s eye conjures is by Man’s design – and this remaking is exalted as “self-expression.” it is a triumph! for the mind and the self have prevailed over the flesh. so Mankind wins its sovereignty! for the mind and the self have transcended the limits the crude animal body conspires with nature its murderous mother to impose upon them. whether male or female or sexless, it is for the human self, not base biology, to decide.
within the same patriarchal ideological system that supplies transgenderism’s basic assumptions, nonhuman animals are classed as bodies-only, bodies-without-minds, bodies-without-selves. they are matter, soulless and below the mind, below Mankind. like all matter, they are a resource for men to use. in animal research, nonhuman bodies are appropriated as surrogates for human bodies. this annexation of animal bodies is claimed as our human right on grounds that “animals,” being bodies-only, are inferior to “humans,” whose bodies contain selves, making them persons. bodies-only are at best property, they cannot be people. conceived as corporeal nonpersons, animals become objects, instruments; selfless, they have no rights to themselves. the language of the laboratory furthers this elision of nonhuman selfhood, as individual animals are abstracted into “animal models,” defined as “non-human species used in biomedical research because [they] can mimic aspects of a biological process or disease found in humans.” with this, the creature is dispossessed even of her animality; she is “de-animalized,” reduced to merely a model of her disappeared self. in nightmarish industrial breeding facilities, animals are manufactured like lab equipment and sold as “products.” human researchers use the animals they purchase according to their human purposes and kill them when they are done. and no one has been wronged – not by the breeding, not by the sale, not by the experimentation, not by the killing – for it is the right of the self to use the body for its own purposes. selves are sovereign, bodies exist to be used. the highest law is mind over matter, once again and again and always, in the manmade world."
