Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced its purchase of IQM Radiance as its first on-premises quantum computer. ORNL's quantum computing integration with HPC platforms reached a milestone with this purchase. The IQM Radiance 20-qubit quantum computer develops hybrid quantum-classical applications using superconducting technology. The third quarter of 2025 should bring it. The system's upgradeability to greater qubit counts ensures its flexibility and longevity.

ORNL intentionally purchased an on-premises IQM Radiance system to integrate its formidable HPC infrastructure and cutting-edge quantum computing technology. This latest improvement relies on ORNL's Quantum Computing User Program (QCUP)'s successful partnerships with IQM's Resonance cloud platform for advanced quantum research.
Travis Humble, QCUP advisor and ORNL Quantum Science Centre director, stressed the installation's on-site impact. He added ORNL is a leading US quantum computing research organisation with decades of high-performance computer experience. Humble said, “IQM's on-premises installation will give researchers hands-on access to cutting-edge quantum computing technology as they investigate how HPC systems may integrate quantum computers to gain early quantum advantage. This direct access should accelerate quantum application and integration breakthroughs.

IQM Quantum Computers Co-CEO Mikko Välimäki was thrilled about ORNL's choice, highlighting quantum technology's practicality in current life.
