Viv kisses Riley’s boo-boos because she has healing purple lipstick and Matt slaps the cartoon themed band-aid on that helps the magic lipstick. It’s a team effort.

Hmmmmm? OKAY SO THIS IS A PARENTING MEME, but I feel like all the bad not so good icky news, Riley delivers? Idk I feel like she’s the most level- headed.

AGAIN THEY GOTTA DO IT TOGETHER. Like their cool parents, all of Riley’s friends like coming over because their so chill but Viv and Matt test the friends each time by being absolutely ridiculous and pulling out the baby photos.

Vivi? Maybe? I think they are both in that relm of giving any and everything a nickname. Like Riley could fill a VERY large book, because that’s how her parents roll.

Jesse? Because he would make the lunches for Valerie and Noah because they have to go to school early. So while he makes the sandwiches, Valerie cooks breakfast and it’s really cute.

This I don’t know? I feel like Valerie hates telling bad news because it makes her feel super guilty, but Jesse doesn’t like to either.

VALERIE HATES THE PTA. she hates it,because when she tried to join they were mean to her for being a single mom and then they started critiquing her teachng style so Val doesn’t fuck with no PTA and I thnk Jesse would start world war iii if he went.

They kept infirmary tents distanced from any sort of action for a reason. Nurses were supposed to help save soldiers’ lives, not put their own on the line. It could be argued they were in danger, no matter what. But even so, they were generally the ones who cared for the wounded rather than needing medical attention, themselves. Minnie was one of the more headstrong young women in her group, and between her determination to help people and the surprising shift in battlefield direction, she was now laying on the worst cot they had. She wasn’t under the tent, but instead separated from all of the white men who were supporting their country.

Giving her a more comfortable place to rest than the ground was simply a formality done out of the goodness of Vera and Lorraine’s hearts. It was clear she wasn’t going to last long; even the large amount of bandages couldn’t manage to stop Minnie’s bleeding. For the most part, she was left alone. The two women kept switching off between looking after their friend and tending to the soldiers who lay moaning nearby. It seemed a little ironic that as so many mean whined and grumbled over their supposedly heroic injuries, the young woman who shouldn’t have been in the line of fire accepted her fate with peace.

There was a redheaded man among the lot who had barely woken up for more than a few minutes here and there over the past several days. His skin looked far paler than usual and his eyes glassed over when they managed to open for however short a time. His busted leg left him at the mercy of a makeshift pair of crutches and stuck in the tent for at least another week. During the time since his arrival, he’d grown to have a large appreciation for the women who looked after him. Each of them had something different to offer, and he always enjoyed their company. However, it was barely a secret among them that he’d grown closest to Minnie out of all the rest.

Their friendship formed as if it was always meant to exist. A spark arose between them, feeding off of their shared positivity and a respect for each other that allowed societal expectations to melt away until they parted ways once again. Their laughs turned into a shared understanding and ability to open up about topics they would otherwise avoid. Some onlookers might expect them to share a deeper love for one another. Whether or not it was there, neither one of them acted on it outright.

But as great as their connection was, it gave Lorraine and Vera pause. The two women knew they needed to break the news of his friend’s condition to him, but they were using his delusional moments of unrest as an excuse to delay. They hoped she’d improve by the time he finally awoke, yet they knew by now a different fate was inevitable.

It was late in the evening by the time Hugo finally came to and didn’t slip right back into a lack of consciousness. Vera checked on him only minutes after this. Upon hearing the news, the young man rushed outside the tent, using the woman for more support than his crutches as he haphazardly hurried past his sleeping cohorts.

He sat gingerly on the edge of Minnie’s cot, his leg dangling forgotten as he gently touched her face. It was dark, yet he could still make out her features as she gazed up at him. A little smile met his lips. With extreme care, he shifted the nurse into his arms, leaning her up against his chest. The other two ladies helped with this process, giving their friend’s hand a squeeze before departing to leave the two of them alone.

Hugo rubbed his thumb over her shoulder, liking the simplicity of holding her close. Both of them had been through so much, and he didn’t want to believe this could be the end. How he ever deserved to have her in his life, he wasn’t sure. He’d need to thank God every single morning and every single night for bringing them together.

Her fingers curled weakly over his, and they remained silent. The quiet finally ended when he pressed his face into the short curls on the top of Minnie’s head. “I always thought it would be me.” It came as just a whisper, but she heard him perfectly.

“Your caretakers are too good to ever let that happen.” Her words were even quieter, and he kissed her hair, smiling to himself at the disappointing irony of this situation. God might have a design for everyone, but Hugo hoped only great things would come into this lovely woman’s life.

With no knowledge of how much longer both of them would remain cognizant, they retreated back into the adoring, wordless evening.
