38: Tunde Olaniran // Transgressor
Transgressor Tunde Olaniran 2015, Quite Scientific (Bandcamp)
Transgressor comes with a comics-style poster of Olaniran standing before a judge in a futuristic court room. A raven has swooped down and removed some kind of inhibitor helmet from Olaniran’s head, freeing them to fire a bolt of purple lightning into the judge’s mouth and smash a few cops. The robot stenographer looks a tad startled. It’s relatable; any comic book nerd kid has probably walked home from school pretending to wield mutant powers to hurl things around. (I still sometimes, very subtle-like, do a Magneto hand gesture as I pass through sliding doors at the grocery store.) For someone with the variety of gifts Olaniran has, having the chance to bring them all to bear on recording an album probably feels like going full Storm. They produced the record; wrote most of the songs; rap, sing, and change up their vocal style every other bar.
The result is a maximalist album, each track built to show off everything Olaniran can do, as uninhibited as the lightning crackling from their fingers in the illustration. Take “KYBM.” Olaniran comes in singing like Usher over a gargantuan Lex Luger-ish trap beat, switches to a quick house-inspired bridge, then a sassily rapped verse, a (different) Usher-like R&B chorus, back to the house-y bridge (as an instrumental), and then a slowed down reprise of the chorus. That synopsis leaves out at least a half-dozen flow and tempo change-ups. The following track, “Namesake” is even more turbulent, throwing Danny Brown, Luger, the chorus from Drake’s “Over,” EDM, and the GoldenEye 007 soundtrack into a Magic Bullet (weird meal substitute, but go off).
This isn’t necessarily a critique. When it works, it’s thrilling, and if not every idea is good you seldom have to wait long for the next one to arrive. In many ways Transgressor is a survey of every hot sound in hip-hop and R&B circa 2015, and it’s wild to see how much those genres have changed in the past eight years. (Just as the way I used ‘wild’ there will glow like a hot coal to a reader of this review in 2031.) Anyway, I’m partial to the comparatively chill “Run to the Gun” and “Paladin,” where you get to hear Tunde really show off what they can do as a rapper. This isn’t an album for Hip Hop Quotables, but it sounds like Tunde could flow like this for days without slipping up.
The vinyl version omits a coupla tracks from the digital version for space reasons—I miss “Diamonds,” a catchy posse cut that features Olaniran’s best bars, a Taco Bell-referencing chorus, and some solid guest verses from fellow Michiganders iRAWniQ and Passalacqua. I didn’t even realize it was missing from the vinyl version until I streamed “Paladin” to check a note and it ran into the next track. While there’s nothing wrong with a true solo effort, even Prince had Sheena Easton drop by to make Sign o’ the Times a little less insular.
