It’d been weeks since Bobby had seen another person.Maybe it was for the best, because the last of his supplies were cut down to remnants of rotten fruit and one can of dog food, already half eaten. He probably would’ve died of starvation if not for this. He was limping now, gushing blobs of thick blood painted the side of his jeans from a gash that ran deep along his thigh. He had a gun, but only one bullet left. And he was saving that for the worst. Fuck. He was a lousy fucking shot. Everytime his shaky hand aimed he’d pinch his eyes closed and it would bounce. His breath came in ragged huffs as he stumbled down what used to be a backroad. It was now overtaken by weeds, bunches of flowers and fruits. It was.. beautiful. He’d seen raccoons in the distance foraging as he ducked behind rusted-out cars. His leg stiffened, and he wobbled around the discarded lost items, phones, pacifiers, a chewed up dog leash. His boots splashed through shallow puddles, soles barely holding together with tape and pure desperation. Every few seconds, he looked back, realizing he hadn’t made it that far at all. Damn. They were coming. These bastards didn’t moan or stumble. No, these ones ran. He could hear them, low, gurgling snarls echoing through the trees behind him. Fast. They clicked closer. “Shit. shitshitshit-“ he hissed, spit dribbling through his teeth. Bobby pushed his legs to move even as they screamed at him to stop. His side ached from where he’d slammed into a metal fence trying to escape them just minutes earlier. His ribs might’ve been cracked. Something felt wrong in his chest, he’d pass out if he kept going like this.. Tufts of grass began to brush against his knees, and his footsteps softened in the underbrush of the grass. He let himself slow, Up ahead, A farmhouse, sagging sideways into the grass. The windows nailed shut with uneven boards, front door barely hanging on by one hinge, swaying open and closed with the wind. Bobby didn’t think. He just threw his body toward the open doorway, landing hard on his knees inside and dragging the door shut behind him with his foot, and it slammed, staying stuck where it was. He rested his back against it, and for everything went still. Just for a second. Just enough to hear the pounding in his ears. To feel the warmth of blood still running down his leg. To taste copper in his mouth. Bobby wasn’t sure if he was still in his body, his vision felt blurry and he thought he could close his eyes just for a little while.. Then the banging started. The door shook violently. He pinched his face in worry, then it twisted- relief. He let out a sound. Almost a laugh, but not really. It died in his throat, and he sputtered out prayers actually cursing him, cursing his father. , gripping his last bullet in a shaking hand, jaw clenched so tight it could crack bone. His back hit the kitchen counter, and his eyes darted to the hallway. A shadow passed across the far wall. Fuck was there another one here? He stifled his whimpering.
