Unique performances showcased at Ultra Violet Live 2010

It turns out knowing how to play the harmonica might just bank you a little more than you once thought.

Ultra Violet Live, the university's campuswide talent show, took place Thursday night in Skirball Center.

At NYU's Inter-Residence Hall Council's talent show Ultra Violet Live last week, CAS sophomore Andrew Flockhart, who beatboxed while playing the harmonica, took first place.

"I feel amazing," Flockhart said. "All my friends came out, and my mom came all the way from Indiana. There was a lot of love in the crowd."

This year's French burlesque-themed show, held at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, had its largest turnout ever with over 200 people in the audience.

Sophomore David Sangillo, a juggler who was asked if he was "ninth-generation circus" by judge Hunter Bell, took second place. The third-place contestant, freshman Shaun Sim of Weinstein residence hall, performed a Poi routine.

DC Pierson, a member of the Internet sketch comedy group Derrick Comedy, served as the show's host. IRHC also invited NYU alumni Emma Tattenbaum-Fine and Seth Faber to join Bell to judge the competition.

"We're looking to bring NYU together," Tisch freshman and IRHC member Olivia Baackes said.

UVL marks the final round in IRHC's series of talent shows. Every fall semester, the IRHC holds preliminary talent shows to determine who will represent each residence hall. This year's show featured 18 performances from 23 halls.

Memorable performances began early in the night. Tisch sophomore Martha-Sadie Griffin of Gramercy Green sat down at the piano, smoothed her dress and said, "Just want to say this: I'm single."

CAS junior Lauren Lashua of Greenwich Hotel tap-danced her way to cheers.

Tisch freshman singer and pianist Phoebe Ryan of Third North performed an original song, "To You," with a five-person band composed of strings, electric bass and drums.

"I thought, 'Here's a total pro that has the complete package,'"Bell said.

Third North residents provide Village children Halloween treats

Third Avenue North residence hall treated kids from the NYU neighborhood to an early Halloween yesterday afternoon.

The event at Third North offered students an opportunity to interact with the community, and gave kids a safer alternative to trick-or-treating throughout the city.

The event, called NY Boo, allowed children from the area to go trick-or-treating through the dormitory, knocking on students' doors and receiving chocolates and candy in return. Students attached paper pumpkins to their doors to indicate that they were participating in the festivities.

In addition to the traditional Halloween fare, children and their parents were treated to face painting, a "cake walk," cookie decorating and temporary tattoos in the Third North courtyard.

The event was a hit — even actress Rachel Weisz and her son made an appearance. Weisz's son's costume consisted of a stuffed snake wrapped around his neck.

One participant, Jesse Cores, said she was touched by NYU's efforts to reach out more to the Village community. "We usually go trick-or-treating to friends' apartments, people we know," Cores said. "But we think [NY Boo] is excellent. You guys did a good job and it's always nice to have you involved in the community."

She and her husband accompanied their son Connor, who was dressed up as Wolverine.

CAS freshman and cake walk volunteer Nicole Charmak said she often found it tough to spend Halloween in the city. "NY Boo is for kids who can't go trick-or-treating in the city, because the event is free and trustworthy," she said. Others spoke of how NY Boo brought residents closer together.

"It's a good way of bonding among ourselves and of providing a happy day for [the kids]," freshman and IRHC representative Sahaan Hattangadi said.

"The little kids were so cute in their costumes," Tisch freshman Frankie Fernandes gushed. "I got some great costume ideas now!"

Holiday season starts early for NYU students

On Tuesday, NYU students queued up outside the Kimmel Center to board double-decker buses bound for Central Park. By the looks of it, the Inter-Residence Hall Council's third annual Flurry event, held at Wollman Rink, was off to a bright start.

Flurry brought out students from all residence halls for an evening of ice skating in Central Park.

Students rode double-decker tour buses up to Wollman Rink.

Although ice skating was the main event of the night, the double-decker ride was fun as well — especially for LSP freshman Denise Ng, who confessed that despite being a New Yorker for 18 years, she had yet to ride one until now. A tour guide sang holiday tunes as students sipped on free hot chocolate to keep warm.

The Flurry event itself wasn't free, but five dollars seemed a small price to pay for a merry pre-holiday night of fun. After students arrived at Central Park, they laced their skates and stepped onto the rink, some more timidly than others.

It was Steinhardt freshman Stacy Kim's first time skating at an outdoor rink. She said her favorite part of the night was forming a line with five of her friends and skating while holding hands.

Whether students held onto each other for fun or for protection, it was clear that everyone was enjoying the event. Some students took a break from ice skating to snap pictures with Housie Maguire and collect candy from a tent next to the rink.

"My friends and I, we all agreed that we should definitely go next year," Kim said. "We had so much fun."

Third North again the winner at FYRE Olympics

Third North once again took home the top prize at the annual FYRE Olympics, held at Coles Sports Center on Sunday.  

Open to all freshman students, the FYRE games were organized by the RAs and hall coordinators of each dorm. Captains were then chosen to lead each team to victory. Contestants showed up with faces painted, T-shirts made and spirits high, ready for all-out war.

"A lot of training went into this competition," said Chelsea Culbert, a CAS freshman who lives in Founders Hall. "Emotional training, about a month of it, too."

The Founders team met in the hall lounge before heading down to the competition. Students tied bandanas and lined each other's faces with paint, hoping to look as intimidating as possible.

"We're going to get that trophy. We're going to bring it back to Founders," Antonio Duran, a CAS freshman, said.

Students dressed in their dorm colors. Third North, the "Purple Reign," has been the champion for five years in a row and the team felt confident it would continue its winning streak this year.

"We're going to create a decade of dominance," LSP freshman Sam Miller said after the team swiped a victory in Knockout.

Though named the Olympics, there was a game for everyone. Students crowded around team members competing in Guitar Hero, tug-of-war, Knockout and trivia competitions. A banner competition was set up in a corner, where students planned and designed team banners with pipe cleaners and markers.

"We are the Purple Reign, so we're going to have Third North on top of Mt. Olympus raining down on all the other teams," said an enthusiastic Third North contestant.

Emcee and assistant hall director Joanna Champion, a Tisch alumna, co-coordinated this year's FYRE Olympics.

"NYU gets a bad rap for having no school spirit," Champion said, "so it's really a fun way to get all the students together for a bit of friendly competition."

Freshman convocation relocates to Beacon Theater

NYU and the Rockettes won't be sharing the bill at Radio City Music Hall this year.

The Inter-Residence Hall Council announced at last night's town hall meeting that the annual freshman convocation will be moved from the iconic New York City concert hall to the Beacon Theater on 74th Street and Broadway.

NYU associate vice president of student affairs Tom Ellett said the venue was moved, as Radio City is booked for the next five years.

"A performance of Cirque du Soleil is taking Radio City Music Hall away from NYU for five years," Tom Ellett, director of student affairs said. "Madison Square Garden is undergoing renovations, so it looks like we'll be moving to the Beacon for a few years." Gallatin freshman AJ Kieffer said the switch to a smaller theater will take away from the authenticity of the incoming students' first week.

"I think Radio City is such an iconic New York City building, especially compared to the Beacon," he said. "Not having the convocation there will definitely take away from the experience." At the meeting, NYU assistant vice president of public safety and investigations Jerry Matthews announced plans to computerize the guest sign-in procedure in residence halls. NYU also hopes to digitize the lost and found system that receives up to 500 lost items each month. "We'd like to shorten the amount of time it takes to sign students in and out and reduce the waste that the paper creates," Matthews said.

Ellett also discussed the Community @ NYU Initiative, started by Student Senators Council and University Committee for Student Life chair Katie Sylvester and vice president of student affairs Marc Wais.

"We received 6,000 responses to the email we sent out a few weeks ago," Ellett said. "That's 15 percent of the NYU community. 80 percent responded that they are proud to be NYU students." According to the survey, the majority of responding students met their friends in class or in residence halls, Ellett said.

Transportation was also on the docket last night. Fred Barlow, assistant director of training, transportation and administration, said the university's hybrid bus fleet "far fewer complaints" than the old one. Transportation is still working out the kinks of the bus tracking system and urged students to be patient.

"We want students to embrace the idea that there will be delays," Barlow said. "Sometimes it's better to seek an alternate route."

Lady Gaga-inspired bracelets set to raise funds for Japan

The words "NYU for Japan" are inscribed on a simple silicone bracelet, colored with red and purple and offset by a single NYU torch. The small trinket, while seemingly insignificant, is representative of a much larger project taking place on campus. The piece is part of an initiative between the Inter-Resident Hall Council and the Weinstein Residence Hall advisory team to raise awareness and funds for relief efforts in Japan.

Tisch senior and Weinstein Programming Chair Jose Rivera said the bracelets were inspired by Lady Gaga, who designed her own brand of bracelets in support of Japan. For Rivera, the concept and design of the bracelets came naturally.

"I knew it needed to represent the colors of both NYU and Japan," he said. "'NYU for Japan' was a simple and strong tagline, but I knew it needed something extra — something unique and directly supportive of the relief efforts."

The bracelets will go on sale Friday, and all proceeds will be given to the American Red Cross. Rivera's hope is for the bracelets to be recognized throughout the NYU community and serve as a tribute of the tragic event.

"The bracelet is meant to bring the NYU community together and give them common grounds, regardless of the school they are in, background, sexuality, etc., and make them stand together to fight for a common cause," he said. "It's important that we keep Japan in our minds and in our hearts, and do whatever we can to restore their country."

Through the help of IRHC, news of the fundraiser has spread throughout the residence halls, where the bracelets will be on sale for $1, but students are encouraged to donate more. The Facebook event page already boasts a large following, and Rivera has also received queries about a similar project from Florida State University.

CAS junior and Japanese International Club president Julia Liu has been involved in a number of fund-raisers since the earthquake. Such efforts have inspired her to continue hosting events dedicated to the cause.

"I'm really glad to hear that so many people are on board with the bracelets," she said. "I feel optimistic that people will do the right thing and try to help out in any way they can."

Although the bracelets were scheduled to arrive on Tuesday and distributed to all the resident halls on the April 5, a manufacturing delay has caused the event to be pushed to Friday.

Steinhardt freshman Yuji Tsuchikawa has already pre-ordered four bracelets.

"As a international Japanese student, it is just truly nice to see people gather money for my country," she said. "Japan still needs help and I think it's important that we continue our efforts until the country does not need the support anymore."
