And now, the chapter where Hugh suddenly turns into a different character for basically the rest of the book. I thought there was some sufficient build-up to him deciding "oh well I'm spelled by Bane sucks but I'll live with it", but the falling in love with Iridal thing feels out of nowhere. Maybe if I excuse it with magic, because this easily reads as someone coming under the influence of a spell (emphasis mine):
"Her eyes. Hugh was mesmerized by her eyes. They were large and deeply set, the irises every color of the rainbow-- a glistening spectrum surrounding the black pupils that shifted and changed as the light struck them."
"Do you hear me?" she demanded.
Hugh hadn't really. Something about danger.
I was totally into Iridal's eyes when I first read this... possibly because I was a twelve-year old girl and that's stereotypically what a twelve-year old girl likes, right? Anyway-- Jarre was earlier "mesmerized" by Haplo's eyes and the Sartan runes leading to the mausoleum.
Not going to dig into this observation since this would get too serious, but I'll note that there are numerous domestic abuse dynamics in Sinistrad and Iridal's relationship.
Hugh and Iridal, though... what.
