lithromantic Iris x non-reciprocating Noctis headcanons

aka I’m about a week into watching my friend play FFXV and this is the dynamic I’m most invested in and it’s very specific so it’s like the deepest pit of super rare pair hell and I need to do something about it. So here’s a headcanons post:

Iris has a huge crush on Noctis, but she doesn’t need reciprocation. Actually, she may not even want it, but she’s at a stage where she can’t really figure that out (yet). The theory of it seems nice, but since she doesn’t know what it would actually be like to have her romantic feelings reciprocated, she can’t really say how she would actually feel about it.

As it is, Iris just really likes being around Noctis. It makes her happy and she likes seeing him and pretty much everything about him, you know how crushes are. Noctis is really casual with her and willing to spend time with her or pay her attention in a frequent enough fashion to satisfy her.

In fact, Noctis doesn’t harbour any romantic feelings for Iris and he’s oblivious to her crush on him. He likes her though, maybe feels a little protective of her in a way that is unrelated to her being Gladio’s little sister. She’s a friend, not one he hangs out with on a regular basis, but he likes her and is open to spending time with her when the occasion arises.

As someone who isn’t very expressive in most situation and just goes about his day to day business and interactions with others in a casual way, Noctis still tries to show his interest when around Iris. She could bring up pretty much anything and he would try to stay engaged in the conversation and coming up with a response even if he doesn’t have any strong feelings about the topic himself. And if he can’t come up with anything he would at least give a sincere “mhm” to show that he’s listening to whatever she has to say.

When Insomnia falls to the Empire and King Regis is killed, Iris is concerned with how Noctis is taking things now that he’s carrying such a big burden. But she feels like she isn’t the one Noctis would confide in with his worries and so she tries to cheer him up and offer him distractions from everything that’s going on. She wants to support him as best she can.

Noctis is actually thankful for that, even though he’s shit at expressing these things. He likes having Iris around on the trip, though he wants to keep her out of danger as much as possible so he would never suggest for her to stick around for the whole journey.

Maybe Noctis even likes the attention he receives from Iris, so he tries to impress her in battle but ends up hurting himself and needing healing from her. But it’s all good, because she gets excited and he likes to see her smile.

When Iris gives him the Moogle Noctis doesn’t really know what to do with it, because it’s not the kind of thing he usually owns. But it’s a present and he appreciates the thought and comes to treasure it, because it reminds him of her. He treasures her at this point, because while he’s not exactly like that himself he likes the cheerful and excitable kind of people (it’s the same with Prompto) and how they can sweep him along a little.

Gladio knows about Iris’ crush and they’ve talked about it. So he understands that attention from Noctis makes her really happy without her expecting anything to come from it. That’s why he drags Noctis along to find flowers for her and tells Noctis to give them to her for him, but when the time actually comes he tells Iris that Noctis has something for her, because he knows that’ll make her the happiest.

Noctis feels a little tricked and awkward because this isn’t what he signed up for. But Iris is just genuinely happy about the gesture, so he doesn’t mind the outcome at all. Secretly he’s even thankful that Gladio gave him a chance to show some appreciation for Iris which is something he usually sucks at.

In general I just think there’s a lot of comfort in the relationship between Iris and Noctis. They appreciate each other and look out for each other in their own ways. It’s never about getting together and finding a future as a couple. But it’s a good friendship, something calm amidst the chaos of the Empire overthrowing and destroying so much from the life they used to know.
