Studio Assisting. Part One.
There are probably hundreds of photographic spaces spread across london for hire. Dependant on the job, some photographers may choose to hire a studio to get access to a clean white space and with an area for the client to relax, feel comfortable and talk business. Bringing the client to a location separate from their own business, and your place of work is often a great way of creating a successful business relationship and a high standard of professionalism.
These studios are usually run by Studio Managers and below them, assistants. The Managers sort out the bookings and general upkeep of the studio and the assistant helps maintain, please the client, cater for virtually any needs, help with equipment, understand the equipment, help with marketing.. literally anything! Oh and to open and lock up the studio (first in, last out).
When I was assisting back in january/feb 2010, I was also looking for studio work as I knew it would make my move to london financially sound, but also gaining such experience in a full time role is invaluable. I had a few trial days at various studios, around assisting photographers & meeting a few in London. I also couldn't make it to one of those days as I was assisting. That day I missed was for IRIS Studios.. a fabulous opportunity that I lost.
However, when I assisted Clive Booth (see the last post) a week later.. I found myself at IRIS Studios and literally got on with the studio manager and really just did as much networking as I could. A week later I got handed the job.
