Science and fashion collide in our new CERN project. Since 1954, CERN has explored the fundamental particles that shape our universe by researching antimatter forces from the Big Bang. CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator slows antimatter particles down for scientific study. Dutch designer Iris van Herpen shares a similar fascination with how contrasting objects engage. Her garments that blur the boundaries between nature and supernature, movement and optics, science and art. Van Herpen was invited by CERN, a physics research facility, to collaborate with Nick Knight on a special fashion film. Inside CERN, Molly Bair and Park Soo Joo were fashionable components to examine a thermodynamic intersection of physics and couture, resulting in highly energetic reactions existing beside the unique machines that study the laws of nature. In 1951, CERN — Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire — was conceived to analyse particles that comprise the universe and how they interact. Particle Physics is CERN’s fundamental practise. The immediate aftermath of our universe’s Big Bang creation guides the motion behind CERN’s fundamental nature law emotions. Every particle of matter has an identical antimatter particle. They have the same mass, opposite electric charges and other characteristics. When a particle meets its antimatter partner, they eradicate each other, changing into energy. Shortly after the Big Bang, matter and antimatter were produced in equal amounts. An imbalance left slightly more matter than antimatter, an asymmetry that remains an unsolved question. CERN applies particle physics as a method to deconstruct particles of antimatter created on site, for study. The lab designed a unique machine called the Antiproton Decelerator (AD). Their decelerator slows particles down, then redirects these particles to six particular experiments for antimatter research.
The fashion designer Iris Van Herpen has a like-minded passion for asymmetric materials with contrasting intentions. Van Herpen was a designer who preferred hand sewing, until she became introduced to 3D printing and architecture. Now, man and machine inspire her design process. Movement, transformation and her dance training all coalesce to create optical illusions that constantly invigorate the Dutch-based designer’s material development. Van Herpen weaves a logical ecosystem found in nature into her trompe l’oeil ‘glitches’ — techniques, materials, perceptions of movement — to create her own fashion system of the senses.
In 2022, CERN invited Iris Van Herpen to its France and Switzerland-bordered research lab. Inside CERN’s largest particle accelerator, the Hadron Collider, the designer, Nick Knight and CERN scientists collaborated on a fashion project within scientific boundaries. The Collider, CERN’s Antimatter Factory and the CERN Control Centre (CCC) became fashion film scenography for two days. Alongside models Molly Bair and Park Soo Joo, Van Herpen combined nature and supernature for distinctive mechanics. Knight envisioned man-made structures in hyperreal interplay with Van Herpen’s kaleidoscopic constructions. CERN is the thermodynamics of fashion colliding with physics to express the interstellar creative possibilities within our universe.
