Ferret Production Line
Finding model Ferret armoured cars is not easy, especially if your chosen scale is 1:72. By chance, I found a diecast Matchbox toy at a London market.
Using Siligum putty I was able to create a mould from the upper hull section. Rather than attempt to remove the wheels for cloning, I looked at the other kits in my collection and found that the Airfix 1:76 scale model of the German Sd.Kfz 222 has wheels that are only a fraction of a milimetre different in size. Using the justification of 'close enough', I took a moulding of these and used Gedeo crystal resin to cast four wheels and and an upper hull.
The lower hulls are, quite obviously, cut and carved from balsa. Upper surface details not moulded will be recreated using sheet styrene, 3D fabric paint and modelling clay.
(The reasoning behind using wood for the lower hulls is a fairly bland one: It's out of sight and it's relatively cheap. There's also the whole 'I don't to rip the wheels off the diecast' business...)
