I don't know, they're have different roles in the narrative. Richard is a buffoon who is occasionally helpful. Madalena and Isabella are the smartest characters on the show, working against one another. Madalena is more fleshed out than Isabella, because we know more of Madalena's backstory and vulnerabilities, and they're not solved with 'I love you'. I think if there were to be a season 3, we'd probably see a Madalena redemption arc.
Yes, but turning one of the two developed female characters in the entire show into the major villain doesn’t sit right at all. Already, every single female character on that show is a love interest for someone else. Madalena was a character who broke away from the mould. She’s ambitious, independent, and sexually liberal, and the story actively punishes her for it.
Compare Richard, who is, as you say, a complete buffoon. Nevertheless, Richard has:
kidnapped a young woman and forced her to marry him
executed people for fun and games
invaded a peaceful kingdom and murdered countless people
is a tyrant in every definition of the word
And then season 2 comes along and not only does no one try to make Richard answer to his crimes, or recognise that he is actually a terrible human being who is just as cruel as Madalena is. Instead of being demonised like the woman, he magically becomes the one true king of all. There is a scene where he tries to tell Bobby (a female character introduced solely so he can stop being a virgin) that he never slept with anyone because he thought it should be between two people who love each other. Despite the fact that he:
kidnapped a young woman and forced her to marry him
only didn’t rape her because she told him she had a ‘vow of chastity’ and his own self-esteem issues
actively refers to her kidnapped wife - Madalena - as ‘frigid’
The show is even more forgiving toward Gareth, who has been pretty much set up as a complete murderous sociopath. Who is also now magically on the heroes’ side and somehow has a heart?? because of love?? Despite the fact that it went against every established character trait he had?
All of this could be forgivable if the show is as self aware in this area as it is in terms of its general ‘nonsensical’ existence. Don’t even get me started on their portrayal of POC and women in general. But this is something where it doesn’t seem to display any self-awareness at all. Galavant may be a parody of the fairy-tale genre, but it is making a statement when they choose which tropes to subvert and which to use and embrace without any question. And it is embracing every horrid trope that should have been thrown out decades ago.
