Both men were seated in the armory with a first aid kit between them. Reinhardt had done something stupid and, as he always did, Balderich came rushing after him without pause. The injuries they sustained would heal just fine but it sure was embarrassing trying to explain the toppled over shelves, spilled paint, and strewn about tools. So they sat and helped bandaged their wounds andvowed to tell no one of the debacle.

Torbjörn leaned back, just slightly, their lips parting gently. Torbjörn’s right hand was still tangled in the front of Reinhardt’s shirt, forcing Reinhardt to bend over almost in half to reach Torbjörn’s eye level.

Reinhardt blinked. “Am I awake?”

Torbjörn stared at him for a long second, and then dropped his hand from Reinhardt’s shirt.

“Not exactly the reaction I was looking for,” Torbjörn said gruffly.

“I know why he’s here, Mother,” Torbjörn said. He looked down at his plate, pushed the toast around without eating it.

“He’s here because he got into some trouble back home,” his mother said gently. “And his mother asked us if—”

“I know, I know,” Torbjörn interrupted. “Never mind.”

His mother looked so genuine. And it hurt. It hurt to know that not only did she not trust him without a babysitter anymore, she didn’t even trust him enough to tell him the truth.

Country boy. It was stupid, but the words made Torbjörn seethe. What right did Reinhardt have to act like he was better than Torbjörn? To act like he knew things that Torbjörn didn’t? Torbjörn knew everything that stupid city boy knew, and then some. There’s a lot about me that you don’t know. Torbjörn scoffed, storming back into the house and into his room. As though Reinhardt had hidden depths. As though the guy didn’t wear every emotion plainly on his face. As though Torbjörn hadn’t guessed everything he needed to know about Reinhardt the day he showed up.

And then he realized that the orange dot was the end of a cigarette. Torbjörn was standing outside, leaning against the side of the shop, smoking calmly in the two a.m. darkness.

Reinhardt only hesitated for a half a second, and then he was quietly making his away across the attic, down the stairs, and then out of the house to the dark yard beyond.

Riding had always been a solitary activity for Torbjörn, something he’d done alone as soon as he was old enough for his parents to let him ride without supervision.

He’d never really wanted to take someone riding with him. Not Ingrid, not any of his friends in middle school or high school. Even more than the blacksmithing shop, riding was Torbjörn’s way of getting away from everything, of being alone.

But for some reason, he wanted to share this with Reinhardt.
