The Frog King, or Iron Henry
“The Frog Prince, or Iron Henry,” by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, from The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, translated by Jack Zipes. Read online.
This is the first tale in the Grimm’s Complete Edition and the one The Princess and the Frog is based on. Maria Tatar includes it in her Beauty and the Beast collection of animal brides and grooms. I see the connection to “Beauty and the Beast.” With both tales we tend to use them to tell people to look beyond the surface and give a guy a chance to prove he is a prince of man underneath his seemingly unattractive exterior. From this tale, we also get the saying “You’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince,” but in this version she doesn’t actually kiss the frog. She abuses him instead by throwing him against the wall. I’m not sure why physical battery breaks the curse that has trapped the prince as a frog, but this is not the only tale in which this type of violence ends with a transformation back into a beautiful human form.
The tale itself is always fascinating, but this princess is not a very likeable person. She is snooty and mean, and she makes promises she doesn’t intend to keep. She doesn’t really deserve the prince.
Maybe that’s why Iron Henry is part of the story. Iron Henry is the servant whose heart broke and threatened to burst when his prince was struck with a curse. Henry had iron bands placed around his heart to hold it in place. Those bands start breaking at the end of the tale when the prince is transformed into a prince again. Iron Henry’s love and loyalty provide an interesting contrast to the princess who doesn’t appreciate the prince until she sees him at his best.
