william b. irvine’in “güzel yaşam kılavuzu” adlı kitabı, stoacı felsefenin temellerini, tarihi kökenlerini ve nasıl uygulanabileceğini anlatıyor. kitapta epiktetos, seneca ve marcus aurelius gibi stoacıların düşünceleriyle birlikte, 21. yüzyılda stoacı bir yaşamın nasıl sürdürülebileceği tartışılıyor. ben bu kitabı stoacılığı anlamak için okudum. bazı noktalarının islam tasavvufuna benzediğini fark ettim. örneğin kanaat, tevekkül ve nefs terbiyesi gibi kavramlar her iki gelenekte de önemli yer tutuyor. ama stoacılığın insanı acıya hazırlama fikri, bence sınırlı bir çerçevede geçerli. kitaba göre, başımıza kötü bir şey gelmeden önce onu zihnimizde canlandırmalı, böylece olduğunda daha az sarsılmalıyız. ama bu düşünce, her acıya karşı işlemiyor. bugün dünyanın birçok yerinde masum insanlar katlediliyor. bir annenin çocuğu öldürüldüğünde, daha önce “nasıl olsa ölebilirdi” diye düşünmüş olması o acıyı hafifletir mi? stoacılık, ölüm acısı gibi derin yıkımlarda yetersiz kalıyor. mal kaybı, başarısızlık gibi durumlar için işe yarayabilir, ama adaletsiz ve ani ölümlerde insanın ruhu buna dayanamaz. stoacılık duyguları bastırmak değil yönetmek istese de bazı acılar yönetilemez, sadece yaşanır. bu yüzden stoacılığı mutlak bir çözüm olarak ele almak yerine belli sınırlar içinde faydalı bir yöntem olarak görüyorum. gerçek hayatta bazı acılar vardır ki felsefi hazırlık değil ilahi sabır gerektirir.

Maybe the purpose of life is to fill it with as many positive things as you can. Regardless of how bad life gets, don't let it steal your personality, your hobbies, your style. After coming home from a bad day at work, maybe you need to sit down and read a nice book. Maybe we should prioritize the things we love, the things that make us happy, and not just the things we're forced to do to survive. In this society, a little peace from the outside world is important.
