Ugh, you make me best analysis's (is that a word?) re: sansa/sansan fandom/hate. Can I just ask you how you felt about Tyrion by the end of A Dance with Dragons? I personally felt conflicted about him, because I so dearly loved him in GoT and ACoK, but by the end of AFFC and into ADWD, I almost couldn't bear to read his chapters.

Ngl, ADwD was a difficult book to get through for me. This is Tyrion at his very lowest - his self-hate is absolutely suffocating. He's convinced he's a monster, that there's nothing of value about him - that really, as all those people have told him, he'd be better of dead. Tyrion in ADwD is, at moments, quite clearly suicidal. And when you start off the series with a Tyrion who claims with some finality, "I like living," that's tough to see.

We're finally seeing a Tyrion who has had all his defense mechanisms peeled away - the truth is laid bare, and it's tragic and disturbing not at all funny (when the reason a number of readers enjoyed Tyrion up to this point was his humor). You're right - it doesn't make for enjoyable reading.

But it's incredibly realistic. Tyrion's breakdown at the end of ASoS was a long time coming - given Tyrion's lifetime of abuse, I'd say it was nearly inevitable. I can't hate Tyrion for who he's become in ADwD, even if I don't like reading about him. Tyrion already hates himself enough for all of us, I think. But it's important to remember that for as much as Tyrion thinks of himself as a monster, he actually really sucks at being one. This is the man who throws himself in disease-infested waters to save a boy. The man who drags Jorah along when he'd rather give up and die. The man who protects Penny against his better judgement because her innocenence - her status as a "broken thing" - still means something to him.

There's hope for Tyrion yet, and as long as there is, I refuse to let Tyrion make me hate him, no matter how much he might want me to.
