Simon gets really bad phantom limb, sometimes. However, he still refuses to let that stupid rock that watches him sleep measure his shoulder and make a replacement for him.
To me, Simon hates being too warm. Every time he sweats a little, it reminds him of when he was being baked alive inside the iron lung.
“Why is it so hot?”
So he refuses to wear sweaters and blankets unless he is absolutely freezing, like actual death type freezing.
My best ideas always come to me while I’m at work istg but like:
Imagine poor Rocky having to sit outside of Simon’s lead-lined room, watching through the windows while Grace takes care of his fevers.
Grace has decided that Rocky isn’t allowed to help Simon, lest he still have enough radiation to damage rocky. If he’s to hear Simon wake in the middle of the night, lashing from nightmares, he can’t do anything but hope Grace will wake up and help. (And Grace does, he loves that dirty goblin of a man)
Rocky and Simon have a very hostile relationship until Si is healed, just because of this. Simon hates being watched, and that’s all Rocky can do for him.

Stuck in my sister’s car like a dog while she goes into Walmart so I’m writing a snippet of smth. Please tell me if I’m writing Ryland poorly.
Part one (??)
TW: a little bit of stomach bug
It had been weeks of this strange, bloody man in their ship. Friend Grace had locked him in this room and forbade Rocky to enter, explaining the sickness that the man had.
“He’s got some sort of radiation sickness”, Grace had explained, resting a hand on Rocky’s barrier, “..but not a lot. Not enough to damage me, like I said. I need you to stay away, though. I don’t want anything… happening to you.”
Rocky seemed to understand this at the time, but was insistent to watch over their sick visitor. He felt bad for him, looking into the dark room and seeing him wander around.
Their visitor seemed to be missing a major limb, Rocky noticed, watching him grasp at the hollow socket of his shoulder. Earlier he watched Grace seal up the amputation pretty well, along with stitching up blister wounds and the splitting gash that looked like an extension of his mouth.
Now, he was sitting on the edge of the bed, cradling his head in his remaining hand.
Rocky just wishes he could help.
“—FUCK OFF!” The stranger suddenly yells, his eyes locked on Rocky. “STOP—!”
Startled, Rocky clambers away from the window, nearly falling off the side of his makeshift ramp. From inside the room, he hears the man stand from his bed— only to collapse with a fleshy thud.
Quickly follows a couple spattering coughs and a gravelly groan.
“Rocky get Grace!” The boulder exclaimed, hurrying away to where Grace said he’d be. He should be washing this guy’s blood out of several rags.
Thankfully, Grace is too predictable and is still fiddling to get the stains out of cloths.
“..maybe I shouldn’t have used white,” he mumbles to himself. “-this will never come out—“
“EMERGENCY!” Rocky announces as he tumbles around a corner, stopping just short of barreling over Ry. “Visitor fell!”
Grace drops the cloth, taking off in a sprint towards the treatment room—
..only to return a minute later and grab it because he might need it.
Skidding to a stop at the room, Grace hurries to open the door and find his friend (?) just like Rocky had said, collapsed on the floor. He was shaking, face in his hand, seething shallow breaths through his teeth.
Carefully approaching him, Grace crouched down to be close to his eye level. “Heya, friend, can I help you up—?”
The sick man hissed through his teeth: “you’re no fucking friend of mine.”
Grace blinked. He wasn’t sure he heard him right, after all he’d said it quietly.. “..repeat that? S-sorry, I didn’t quite catch—“
“You’re not my fucking FRIEND—!” He spat, pushing Grace away with what felt like enormous force.
Grace tipped backwards, bracing himself with his arms. Emotionally bruised but not intimidated, he scooted a couple feet away. The only other human light years from earth is hostile? Isn’t this my luck.
The stranger struggled to stand, pushing himself up with his hand and stumbling away from Grace. His shoulders were raised defensively, his hand out in a knife-style grip. Fortunately, Grace had pulled all of his sharp metal accessories off when he’d first arrived. His eye was wide open like a scared cat, fixed on the smallest movement that Grace made— the other half of his face was covered by hair.
“Okay..” Grace reassured, showing both of his hands in a surrendering motion, “..but I promise I’m not here to hurt you. I— I don’t even know who you are, you still haven’t told me.” Before he can open his mouth again, the dark-haired man collapses again.
Barely catching himself with his arm, he sputtered out a cough. Dark red blood followed. “Y—you’re not—“ two more coughs, “—e-even real. Nobody f-fuckin’— hrk—“ his sentence was cut short with a short gag before a drool of bile hit the floor.
“Oh, god—“ Grace gasped, stepping forward again to offer the wet rag. “Here.”
IM GETTING AN IDEA IN CLASS AND RISKING MY LIFE TO WRITE IT DOWN!!!!!
(Let’s pretend Si’s radiation has fallen to a level that Grace can be around him without literally vomiting)
Comic about Simon lashing out at Grace after some tastefully irradiated dreams, believing he’s a hallucination or a trick. There’s no way anyone in their right mind would try to help him and his sickness, his injuries, his panic attacks— it HAS to be fake, and he’s fuckin’ tired of it. Absolutely manic, again.
So Grace, wet-eyed and quiet, has to convince Simon AGAIN that he is indeed real and indeed does want to help him, no strings attached. Eventually it’ll work if he says it enough?
Yk eventually Simon falls back into his bed because he feels like Uranium Shit and lets Ry give him a check-up. He’d done a good job taking out the teeth and stitching him back up when he first came.. maybe he’ll be able to be able to help.
