Well I’ll be damned. I felt like doing some more digital experimenting on the stuff, and ended up pulling some conclusions that the offset might actually be a vital part of the whole darksight effect. The first pic here has a copy of the base image layered on top with 100% “lighten” blending, and has zero effect whatsoever, making it identical to the base image. In the second image, I slightly stretched the layer to achieve a slight offset and the effect immediately kicked in with a very familiar looking result :v
