you are drowning but it is strangely beautiful, serene in a way you cannot quite place. perhaps it is because you realise that what is coming is better than what has gone, or perhaps because, despite everything, you are still breathing. there is familiarity. you reach for something, you do not know what, but you need it. the lack of it is what weighs you down. it is what tugs at your soul, tugs you downwards, deeper into the murky waters. the dark and wet envelops you, seep through your skin with consent. transparency is not within your reach. it never has been. that is why you are filled with serenity; why you feel at peace. your eyes are closed and you are frightened at the prospect of seeing. and yet, your eyelashes flutter. your eyelids quiver. there is light, serenity on the other side. for the first time it occurs to you; you can reach serenity without drowning.
