On Adam

"[The human soul] can only occupy a body while it retains a certain structural integrity...and this vessel was ripped apart on a subatomic level by an archangel." -Cas in 10x09, The Things We Left Behind.

So ever since Cas finally confirms for Claire that Jimmy's soul is in heaven, it got me thinking about Adam. And here's my theory: when Cas "Molotoved" Michael with Holy fire in Swan Song, and Adam's body is clearly shown burning up into nothing, what if at that exact moment Adam's soul left his body and when Michael comes back, he is simply occupying an empty vessel?

Now I know what you're going to say: In 6x11, Appointment in Samara, Dean asks Death to save both Sam and Adam and Death tells him to pick only one. But Dean is working off of the assumption that Adam is still in the box; he doesn't necessarily know for sure. And Death never actually confirms the fact, neither before he goes nor after. Is Death omniscient? If he is, he could be aware Adam's not in there and is just testing Dean to see what he'll do if forced to choose. And that he says nothing about Adam after the fact is, I think, just confirmation that Death is freaking Death and finds human concerns pretty trifling.

Alright so it's not perfect but it's believable, maybe? I'm at least calling it headcannon and allowing it to let me sleep at night.
