This time of year was always hard in Sallybrook. There were reminders of missing children, and the fear that you would wake up to news that the child down the street was gone too. Nothing made him want to leave more than seeing, year after year, the town was helpless against whatever powers still resided there. He didn’t let the worry consume the celebration of his favorite holiday, however. A tree was set up in his home from November 1st on, and he had Christmas CDs stuffed in his glovebox for the entire year. It was an awful time of year, but he could separate the holiday from the events.
Sometimes, he knew, that the residents of Sallybrook weren’t as lucky. He had become used to the daily texts from Isaiah and their growing frequency. Maybe it was dangerous, to let himself get wrapped up in the man again, but he couldn’t stop himself from thinking about Isaiah day in and day out. The frequent texts meant that he could pretty easily tell that something was wrong. It was the Haunt, the discussion of a town lockdown, and rumors swirling about how to keep families safe. He knew that it had to weigh heavily on Isaiah, who’s job it was to teach the kids of Sallybrook day in and day out. So, he did the only thing he knew how to do.
A bag slung over his shoulder, he let his knuckles wrap on the man’s front door. Maybe this was too much. Was he allowed to be this concerned, to want to do anything to put a smile on Isaiah’s face again? It was too late now, he realized as the door opened. “Surprise! I thought we could make Christmas cookies? It just seemed like you might, uh, need some gingerbread in your life,” he said, his voice overly cheerful. Hopefully this would help, even if it just was a small thing.
