DISCLAIMER: These are my personal interpretations of the characters from reading the Web/Light Novels. Please also keep in mind that these are rough redesigns and not to be taken as concrete.
(Me talking about the Re:Designs under the cut).
These are almost a year old at this point and I would definitely draw them differently now.
Subaru: The pyjamas being blue and not (what we would call) Western was honestly a weird moment for me, considering how Lugunica is based on Late Medieval/Not-Quite-Victorian Europe. So that's been changed. They're also purple now because #colour coordination.
The manservant uniform was a trip to research. There is soooo much going on when it comes to what they wore and why. It's crazy. Anyway. Subaru's uniform being brown when the maid uniforms had purple accents is such an odd design choice. Why would you do that? So it's purple now. And also she has a cute bow instead of the tie the illustrator gave her.
The maid dress is of course from Stewardess Life, which I say should have been included in the main story instead of being relegated to the Side-Stories. Mostly because (at least to me) it feels like there's a large jump between days there. Anyway, it's canonically Frederica's old uniform so I had to design an outfit for her here, instead of Subaru. The lace-up sleeves were actually inspired by some of the concept art for Rem and Ram!
Rem & Ram: ...First of all, if you're making Oni, why would you make them small and thin? That is not what comes to mind when someone says Oni to me. So that's been changed. The hair and the kimono-ish uniforms were inspired by their original concept art- which is so much better than the end designs in my opinion? Like. Damn. Even the hair is from those. Them having a diagonal cut is so much cooler than the straight fringe they had before! (Also the hair is too similar to Emilia like that). I'd probably change the lacing-lines to just print lines if I were to re:draw these. Which I plan on doing. Someday.
Emilia: First of all she was described as wearing a black skirt when Subaru first sees her after waking up. So. I do like the idea of the open-shoulder sleeves, but would definitely just have her wear a normal short-sleeved blouse if I was drawing it now. Also I think her at home clothes should be comfortable and not overly elaborate like they were originally for this Arc. Also she would have a different outfit and hair for all five days but that seemed a bit much to draw.
Beatrice: She's literally like. Ten. You cannot give her a skirt like that Shinichirou Otsuka. You fucking creep. To be honest I could have just filled in the front of the skirt with some frills, but I decided to go with something younger, as Beako is a child. The poms came from her original design but I think that I'd get rid of them now and replace the fluff with frills. The cute drill-curls she has here are super cute, but I'm thinking about changing them to be a pair of massive twists. Would that work?
Roswaal: His original design is an improvement to the concept art but that is not saying much. I didn't draw it for this Re:Design but I really should have kept the two-tone suit, it's more clowny that way. Anyway, his lipstick was originally red in the books and I really like that. So he's purple and red now. Which actually works really well together if you know what you're doing. Also he has a heart motif now because cutes. Also his shirt is no longer yellow because it is an affront to my eyes. Yes I know why it was originally yellow because clown but have you considered my fucking eyes.
Petra: None of the village kids have pleasant designs. Especially her. Why is she wearing leggings? Fuck that. She's wearing trousers now. As she should. I hate leggings in fantasy they would not exist. She's also getting shorts for her maid uniform when I finally get around to Arc4.
Meli: Her Arc2 outfit is actually the only good outfit out of any of the kids. Also. She has brown hair. She canonically dyed her hair for this Arc. It should not be blue. Why is it blue? Also the blue clashes with her outfit. Anyway the only major change here was adding trousers because I feel they create a much more pleasing silhouette.
Subaru Scar Chart: She got mauled. The fact that she's never drawn covered in scars is so fucking wild. She's got them in the words so why not in the art? I won't be doing one of these for Arc3 because she was healed by Ferris each time, but she will get one for Arc4.
Thank you for reading! Please let me know your thoughts on the Re:Designs in the comments below; what you liked/didn't like, anything at all!
I'll try to remember to release Arc3 in a week or so!
