One day Lord Krishna was sitting to eat food. They just barely accepted a grass or two that suddenly they stood up. There was a deep confusion on their mouth. They ran fast to the castle entrance, but moments later returned peacefully and sad and started eating again.
Rukmini ji was surprised to see this. He humbly asked, "Lord! Why did you go out so quickly, and then come back so sad? "
Sri Krishna smiled and said, "One of my devotee was passing through the capital. He was singing my name immersed in love and devotion while playing the one star. People were mocking him thinking he was crazy, pouring stones on him. His forehead was bleeding. Seeing her in that state I immediately ran to defend her. "
Rukmini ji again asked, "then why did you come back without helping her? "
Lord Krishna replied in a serious voice, "I had just reached to the door that he put down his single star and himself was ready to resist by lifting the stone. When she carried herself the weight of defense, I felt she no longer needed my help. If he had a few more moments and patience and had complete faith in me, I would definitely protect him. "
The process of vidhi-mārga, following the regulative principles, is utilized in the worship of Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa, whereas the process of spontaneous service—following in the footsteps of the gopīs, who are the denizens of Vṛndāvana—is transcendentally more advanced and is the process whereby Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are worshiped. One cannot attain this elevated position while worshiping the Lord in His opulence. (Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 8.230)
"When a devotee takes shelter at the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is completely cleansed of all misunderstanding or mental speculation, and he manifests renunciation. Once having taken shelter at the root of the lotus feet of the Lord, a devotee never comes back to this material existence, which is full of the threefold miseries." ŚB 4.21.32
