This morning we borrowed rubber boots from the hostel and took the long, muddy hiking trail through the rainforest.  Highlights include tiny red frogs, which we were later told are not poisonous, two pigs tied to trees, and at least two points where we weren’t quite sure which way to turn.  We couldn’t find the beach we were looking for until we asked two local boys.  They lead us right to it, and we paid for the favor in cookies.  The beach was a tiny, rocky cove with a grassy cliff overlooking the sparkling water.  We rested there and ate sandwiches.  Then, we took turns going in groups of two to snorkel.  Like the day before, it was amazing.  I particularly remember some small dark fish with the flashiest iridescent blue spots.  There was a dramatic moment when one friend dropped her waterproof camera while snorkeling, and then another friend and I found it, and she managed to get it back!  We were accompanied on our hike by the hostel’s pudgy canine resident, Sadie.  She sat on the cliff with us, panting in the heat, and got very excited when we finally flagged down a boat taxi that dropped some people off at the beach.  We clambered into the boat, plopped Sadie in too, and rode back to the hostel.  

That afternoon we took another boat taxi over to Bocas Town to walk around and shop.  I got two beautiful beaded bracelets.  We asked one of the ladies at the market where she’d recommend going for good, cheap food.  The place she suggested was closed, so we asked someone else, and finally got just what we wanted for dinner in a little unassuming looking “soda” restaurant.

I left Boquete two days ago and made my way back to the Caribbean side of Northern Panama to Bocas del Toro.  Bocas Del Toro was visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502 in his search for a passage to the Pacific Ocean.  Today Bocas del Toro consists of Bocas Town on the main land as well as 9 islands in the surrounding area.

I had booked my stay at Bambuda Lodge, a new hostel in Bocas Del Toro on Isla Solarte.  When my taxi ferry pulled onto the dock, I knew I was in for an amazing stay ahead of me at Bambuda Lodge.

Bambuda lodge operates completely off the grid.  This means, the water we drink and shower with is filtered rainwater and the power we consume is solar power as Bambuda lodge has the largest solar grid in all of Bocas.

Bambuda Lodge has muck boots to use, so this afternoon after a VERY lazy morning (apparently the Volcan Baru hike REALLY kicked my butt), I headed off into the humid jungle behind the lodge to see if I could find anything interesting.  I was thrilled to see more than 10 red poison dart frogs and a few parrots.

Some of the best snorkeling in Bocas del Toro is also around Isla Solarte, so after my jungle hike I grabbed my mask, snorkel and goPro and enjoyed the water to cool me down and was surprised at the amount of species I saw in just a short period.

After snorkeling I went to take a shower, and was shocked to have hot water as 5 other girls had just taken one ahead of me.  Then it was time for another relaxing communal dinner before I snuck off back to my bed as last night I got absolutely attacked by the sand flies and have the bites/blisters to prove it.

So beyond the sand flies, Bambuda lodge has been great and I’m looking forward to another day of relaxing, snorkeling and maybe even some kayaking if I feel up to it tomorrow.

VOLUNTARIO

Ich bin nun seit drei Tagen in der Escuela Solarte beschaeftigt :-) Morgens geht es immer kurz vor 8 los und Carlos, dessen Tochter auch bei mir in der Klasse ist, faehrt mich mit dem Wassertaxi auf eine der vielen Inseln hier. Ich muss eingestehen, dass das sogar fast mein persoenliches Highlight ist beim Volunteering- mein Weg zur Arbeit und wieder zurueck! 5 Minuten abschalten und ueber den Ozean duesen.  Allgemein wie ist meine Freiwilligenarbeit? Wo soll ich anfangen? Als ich das erste Mal in die Klasse gekommen bin und die Lehrerin den Kindern erklaert hat, wer ich bin und was ich tue, sind erstmal zwei Winzlinge auf mich zugerannt und haben meine Hand genommen, sodass ich vor lauter “Durcheinandersein" durch die Reise fast angefangen habe zu weinen… Da die Englischlehrerin ja auf einem Seminar diese Woche ist, war ich bis jetzt in der Kindergartenklasse und habe dort geholfen. Wir haben getanzt, gebastelt, gespielt, gemalt, gegessen etc. etc. Es ist schon sehr anstrengend 20 Qaelgeister auf Trapp zu halten ;-) Andauernd will jemand auf deinem Schoss sitzen (ich hab ihnen “Hoppe, Hoppe, Reiter" gezeigt: den deutschen Text verstehen sie natuerlich nicht, aber trotzdem koennen sie ihn schon mitsingen und amuesieren sich koestlich), irgendwo hoch oder runtergehoben werden, einem unbedingt das neueste selbstgemalte Bild zeigen, puzzeln, Pirouetten drehen oder einfach nur Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt bekommen. Aber natuerlich macht es auch Spass mit ihnen herumzutoben. Anfangs wurde ich generell noch wirklich angestarrt von manchen Kindern, aber schon nach diesen wenigen Tagen scheint es, als wuerden wir uns ewig kennen und jeden Morgen wenn ich am Bootssteg aus dem Taxi steige, winken sie mir schon zu. Sie haben sogar heute versucht mich mit braunen Filzstiften anzumalen, dass ich so aussehe wie sie… Zum Zustand der Schule- es ist dreckig, sehr dreckig, ueberall liegt Muell herum und fast alle Spielsachen sind kapputt, verdreckt, unvollstaendig oder unbrauchbar. Die Schule besteht aus drei Klassenzimmern direkt nebeneinander. Als Fenster dienen die Loecher in der Wand, der Putz broeckelt ueberall ab. Die Kinder nehmen leider auch dauernd Zeug in den Mund und legen es wieder zurueck- bis es der naechste anfasst. Eigentlich ein Graus fuer mich, da die Kinder auch oft ungewaschen wirken und mueffeln. Also die Hygiene ist wirklich in keinster Weise irgendwie vergleichbar mit deutschen Schulen, auch weil UEBERALL streunende stinkende Hunde rumlaufen, die die Kinder auch dauernd anfassen. Ich werde in jedem Fall zum Abschied einige Spiele, Stifte, Bloecke usw. kaufen. Da die meisten Kinder wirklich nur einen kleinen Bleistift und ein kleines Heft, das aussieht als wuerde es gleich auseinander fallen dabei- die meisten Raenzen, die Stische und Stuehle und das Mittagessen ab und zu sind vom “Gobierno Nacional", von der Regierung, gestiftet. Was mir sehr gefaellt sind die Schuluniformen hier, die kleinen Maedels in ihren Roecken mit den weissen Blusen sind zum Fressen suess und es staerkt natuerlich auch den Zusammenhalt.  Morgens wird als erstes immer gebetet und danach schnappen sich alle einen Muelleimer und die Wiese vor der Schule wird aufgeraeumt- der Tag beginnt. Jedoch muss ich auch sagen, es ist mehr als schwierig die Kinder zu verstehen, mit der Lehrerin klappt das ja noch irgendwie halbwegs, aber da die Kinder oft nuscheln oder eben diese Baby/Kindersprache benutzen, verstehe ich oft ueberhaupt nichts. Hier ist meine Devise laecheln und das einzige Wort benutzen was man hier wirklich braucht- naemlich “NO!" - und das beherrsche ich ;-)

Über mein Volunteer Projekt

Also das ist jetzt wirklich schnell gegangen! Heute war schon mein letzter Volunteer-Tag, da morgen die Lehrerinnen nicht da sind. Ein Grund dafür dass das so schnell vorbei war ist auch das schlechte Wetter dass hier seit über einer Woche festhängt. Da es nämlich ab und zu in der früh geregnet hat ist die Schule ausgefallen und ich habe insgesamt nur 5 von 10 Tagen gearbeitet!! Jetzt zu meiner Arbeit an sich, also ich habe meißtens, wie auch schon an meinem ersten Tag beschrieben in der Pre-K also Vorschule mitgeholfen. Was tatsächlich von Tag zu Tag anstrengender wurde, am Anfang waren die Kinder super lieb und wollten alle mit mir spielen aber natürlich wenn ich öfter da bin wird das immer uninteressanter und die Kinder werfen dann Stühle um essen Kleber und fangen an sich zu schlagen. Alles natürlich als ich mit ihnen alleine im Zimmer war und mit meinem doch eher beschränkten Spanisch war es dann nahezu unmöglich die Situation in den Griff zu kriegen, da meine kläglichen, fehlerhaften Versuche die Kinder in die Schranken zu weisen mir nicht besonders viel Respekt ihrerseits verschafft haben. Dennoch gab es natürlich auch schöne Situationen als ich zum Beispiel eine der kleinsten heute nach dem Unterricht herumgetragen habe oder an dem Tag als ich meine Kamera dabei hatte und Junge total begeistert davon war. (Fotos folgen gleich) Komisch war es für mich auch zu sehen wie das Leben der Menschen auf dieser Insel aussieht, dagegen ist Bocas del Toro nämlich die reinste Goldgrube. Sie leben teilweise in Selbst zusammengenagelten Holzhäusern ohne Fenster. Von den Toiletten außerhalb der Wohnhäuser will ich garnicht erst anfangen! Die Schule hat nur 3 Klassenzimmer das heißt es werden jeweils 3 Jahrgänge zusammen unterrichtet. Ein vierter Raum befindet sich gerade im Bau, das aber auch schon seit letzten Jahr und sieht aus wie eine Ruine. Trotzdem aber sind die Kinder fröhlich und aufgeschlossen (sehr...) und das ist meiner Meinung nach die Hauptsache! Ich bin sehr froh dass ich diese Erfahrung hier machen konnte, es wird einem einfach klar dass die Bildung und der Lebensstandard den wir normalerweise kennen alles andere als Selbstverständlich ist.
