Oban and Isle of Seil
Happy Sunday!
So I think the highlight of my week was the day trip I took to Oban and the Isle of Seil. My week was pretty ordinary except for Monday, when I went out with the Law Society, which was super fun. We had a meet and greet on campus then headed over to a local bar called Bookclub (literally the best!!). It was a lot of fun and I met some new people who were pretty awesome also Bookclub makes a mean Strawberry Gin Mojito.
The rest of the week consisted of battling wicked icy streets (they don't salt here it's a problem), going to class and drinking lots of coffee.
Yesterday, however was the highlight. We started the day fairly early, the tour met at Main Campus at 8:15 and it's a 20-30 min walk from our flats so it was still dark when we left. Our first stop of the day was at Loch Lomond, the largest loch in Scotland but not the UK, which is only about an hour from Glasgow. Loch Lomond is beautiful, mountains flank one side, rolling hills the other. It was amazing. We stopped at the Village of Luss on the loch which is a very small but incredibly quaint village. The houses were so cute and the whole thing was super picturesque.
The next stop was Oban, which is the seafood capital of Scotland. Oban was also very picturesque but in a different way. The city is full of old buildings but it's mostly closed down in the winter as it is on the sea. We grabbed a quick lunch before setting out to explore. The 2 main attractions of Oban, other than the sea, as I understand are McCaig's Tower and the ruins of Dunollie Castle. We didn't make it to the castle ruins but we did climb up to the tower. The tower is situated almost directly above the tower so it's views were pretty amazing.
After Oban we headed to the Atlantic Bridge, which connects the Scottish mainland with the Isle of Seil. It's nicknamed the Atlantic Bridge because it's where the Scottish mainland touches the Atlantic Ocean. It's supposedly good luck to walk from one side of the bridge to the other so we of course did.
Atlantic Bridge was only a brief stop before the main highlight which was the Isle of Seil. The Isle has this wonderful "mountain", mountain may not be the right word but it was pretty high so maybe I'll go with mini-mountain. So this mini-mountain is fairly hike-able (the way up not really being the issue) and it affords amazing views of the isle but also of the Atlantic Ocean. The hike up wasn't too bad, since it's Scotland and it rains a lot, the "trail" (basically a goat path) was pretty muddy and slick but we made it! The way down however was a fair bit trickier, as it had started raining as we were all on top of the mini-mountain. I did slip once, which really only hurt my pride, but was quite glad to be on flat ground again.
By the time we finished climbing it was time to head back to the city as it was about a 3 hour drive back. The trip was amazing and I'm really glad I went!
Today was pretty calm, some netflix/reading and Sarah (the gem that she is) made dinner (which was delicious). Tomorrow I have the super exciting task of making the trek to the mega Tesco, which is really only a 15min walk but feels like forever with bags full of groceries.
Friday I'm heading to London to meet up with Liz and her mom, which means I'm super excited for this week to fly by.
Have a good week and stay tuned!
