SCURVYBLR: I FINALLY HAVE AN ANSWER TO A PIRATES WORLDBUILDING QUESTION I HAVE HAD FOR TWO YEARS

anyways so the npc text claimed something about thermohaline circulation changes that allowed the southern seas to be accessed

i asked one of my professors who works in marine biology (am currently taking a course on climate change and how it affects life on earth)

the answer: it IS theoretically possible for deep current changes to affect winds and sailing and the like, BUT we don't have models to predict it (because we have little data on wind patterns in the past), so this is still a topic that's being researched (there's this other professor at my university that's in on it, but i've never spoken to him before)

HOWEVER, this is a LONG-TERM process that doesn't just happen overnight. sorry to ecclesia but real life is different

TL;DR: i was correct in predicting that they put artistic license into the high seas, PEACE

y'all i don't actually have a specific headcanon set for p!scar because that can change depending on whether i want him to be the same character as hc8!scar or not

i DO subscribe to boatem = the flying jellie crew tho, SO in the continuities where p!boatem ≠ hc!boatem, here are a couple of headcanons for p!grian and p!pearl specifically (they're the only ones namedropped or alluded to in canon, sorry):

p!grian back wing tats. that is all. pesky birb for a reason :>

p!pearl is named after an ancestor or semi-legendary figure (haven't decided yet) who was in the kestrel faction. the og pearl was an architect for the kestrel tavern (why they have occasionally been nicknamed "pearl doors") + is somehow related to pearl's manifestation in p!saus' chat (ghost parrot chat accompanied past kestrels in life). p!pearl was trained in this building style

i was rewatching the pirates finale earlier today and remembered something

you know how cruppy was trying to explain that iris had ivy captured and got so fed up by the cast not understanding what it was trying to say, it went off to sail directly to the temple?

p!scott was among those vocally speculating what cruppy was trying to say, but then he saw the nether star (that cruppy was using to convey iris' identity)

and then he just. picked it up. dropped it. and then basically stopped speaking for almost the entire rest of the scene.

choose violence ask game! 1 for pirates smp? (yes this is an invitation to yap abt pirates characters i miss them too)

1. the character everyone gets wrong [ask game]

This one's actually kind of tough for me to answer because I'm the one who practically wrote the fans' manual for Pirates that many others follow and the fandom is small enough for me to not see that many bad takes or mischaracterization as a major issue.

That said, if I had to pick a character, I might just say p!Kyle. He's supremely underrated. I know he's a bit of a meme because of the whole "straight man" flirting/shipping debacle, but that shouldn't be what defines him in this fandom, and his lore, albeit sparse, shouldn't be overlooked IMO.

Because he's a whole lot of things! There's so much trauma you can fit into one man: wanting to live up to a legacy apart distinct from your dead father (and going against your mother(?)'s wishes to live a risky life on the Faction Isles), the implications of possibly watching your workaholic/neglectful father die (re: cursed gold), the whole dropped "do you hear the music?" hallucination arc… And he's bitter about being overtaken by p!Acho in riches! But he's also a bit silly; most of his streams are titled something relating to "tomfoolery" and the like! He's learning to cook and he's a musician who's skirting the faction lines to make friends with Herons! He's considering opening a museum out of Iris' temple in the north!

It's less everyone gets him as a character wrong but more he's overlooked as a character because him as a creator got overshadowed by this one social media incident at the start of the SMP. Or maybe it's just that he streams at a later time than most of the creators and went a bit dormant towards the second half of the SMP, so most people don't know him as well.
