A summary of all the hockey I missed while out in Montauk for 7 days:
Isles blew chance to sweep Caps in Game 4
Isles won Game 5 and advanced to the 2nd round; the Caps were ousted in the 1st round for the 2nd consecutive season
Caps coach Todd Reirden was fired (and many Caps fans are genuinely thanking the Isles on Twitter)
Flyers beat Montreal to become our 2nd round opponents
Isles moved out of the Royal York and into Hotel X
Isles beat Flyers in Game 1; Varly became the only goalie in franchise history to post consecutive playoff shutouts, something not even Billy Smith did
And Kasperi Kapanen was traded to the Penguins while I was in the car coming home
And that’s just hockey. I seriously can’t believe I missed all of this.
GAME 1 IS IN THE BAG!!!!!!!!! 💙🧡💙🧡
So proud of my Isles for rising above the Caps’ antics! Thank you Anders for finally showing up to play and scoring!
*blasts “Bad Blood” at full volume* See you on Wednesday, Caps.
BARZYYYYYYY!!!!!!! 💙🧡
3-0!!!!! Keep your feet on the gas and finish them off on Tuesday!!!!!
I am so pissed, both that I couldn’t watch the game and at the result. Thursday, boys, you are going to win the series; I’m speaking it into existence.
The last time the Isles played the Caps in a first-round series was 5 years ago. I was at the Coliseum for Game 4 and sitting near the Islanders’ net when Tom W*lson targeted Lubo Visnovsky, a defenseman who already had a dozen concussions in his career, with a hit to the head. I will never forget it as long as I live—the savagery of the hit made me sick to my stomach, and I knew instantly that Viz’s career was over (I was right: he never played another NHL game). It’s one thing to watch these kinds of hits on TV; it’s another to see it live. I’ve never been shy about my belief that all hits to the head should result in an immediate suspension, and I feel that way b/c I personally witnessed this hit as an 18-year-old.
Fast forward to the present: Athletic writer Arthur Staple caught up with Viz, who now lives in Slovakia (his home country). Viz said, “[Wilson] didn’t want to play the puck, just me,” and while he has (sort of) forgiven W*lson, “I still want Islanders to beat Washington.” It is my dearest wish that the Islanders win this series against the Capitals for Viz. Let's do it, boys!
VICTORY!!!!!! On to Round 2, baby!!! 💙🧡💙🧡
This is for you, Viz.
