When she was in Iraq, her unit adopted a puppy they found while on patrol. It was a mutt, but she was sure there was a bit of saluki in there, for all it was sleek and speedy and very easy to train. 

They named it Harvey, for reasons best known to Private Tate and shared with no one, and Harvey soon became fast friends with everyone in the unit.

Unfortunately, dogs aren't immune to the hazards of war, and he died in a shelling attack a few months before they left. It probably saved them having to abandon him or put him down, but it struck them all especially hard.

She swore she'd never have a pet, but then Barton offered her a puppy and she accepted. Maybe she'd been more lonely than she'd care to admit.
