Gagging he threw the offending lace trophy across the room, an audible smack sounded as it hit a painting and fell behind a dresser.

Reminding her he was in control, that she might be her father’s only child, but he was his favorite son.

Entering into the room she noted a blockade of curtains stopping the sun from disturbing him, save for one that flittered lazily in the breeze.

A well needed respite to the piss, plastic, and now blood that had assaulted his sinuses.

They say Misha fought to escape the house; found against the remains of the door, trying to pry it open no doubt.

I’m curious on the meaning of Matteo’s tattoos, particularly the 1969 and 1967 ones.

Smihi!! Okay, I'm going to go over all of them because I really thought about which each one means/their origin when I was deciding his tattoos. Gotta show off how much went behind each one 🙂‍↕️

MATTEO'S TATTOOS AND THEIR MEANINGS

1969 and 1967 are the year his parents were born and is a tribute to them. Why it's their birth years is both aesthetic and the fact he doesn't want to think about their deaths. 2000 and 2011 on his knuckles just didn't sit right with him as a 90s baby lmao

Eight pointed stars are thief stars. which is a Russian prison tattoo that the Volcov's adopted despite being in America pre USSR. it basically signified he's a high ranking member of the Volcov bratva

Snake and Floral design- this one he just liked the design but to me it signifies his eventual departure from the Volcov's and now they always viewed him as snake and never fully trusted him. While it doesn't completely wrap around his neck, it shows how the distrust in his family eventually becoming too much to bare and almost a sense of claustrophobia and the need for "air"

Memento Mori is from his time with stoicism while in jail in his early twenties. It led him to getting clean from a drug addiction and though he's fallen away from it, it's something that shaped who he is today, for better for or worse

Ouroboros - this one has a meaning for him and one for me. For him it's the literal 'destruction leading to rebirth' and a past hope that all he's been through will amount to something. That he'll "get his dues" eventually, they were one of his first tattoos and sadly that hope has vanished. To me, it shows the cycle of abuse within the Volcov family and how he plays a role when it comes to the cycle and how it continues.

Icarus’s fall, this one is purely aesthetic and because the story reminds him of his parents and their "fall from grace"

Iron nails, the three iron nails are for the crucifixion of Jesus. Matteo was born and raised catholic and though he is nonpracticing now, he still spiritually believes in many teachings of the church

Sinner - Ironic considering the last one. But regardless this one he highly regrets as he had a 'profound' thought while high and immediately acted on it. The thought was he needed to remain celibate because his libido was the cause of his drug addiction, and the 'sin' he was committing displeased god who fed the addiction. Doesn't make sense, but regardless the tattoo remains because he refuses to remove any of them

Honorable mention because it wasn't listed despite the fact it's one of the first tattoo described in the book??

Seraphim - he has a seraphim on the back of each hand. These are for Aiyla and how much he holds her in high esteem and his undying love for her. Much like the seraphim and their worship for God

B - Besides the obvious; he was attractive with a nice smile and perhaps she had a wish for an enemies to lovers arc. That however he knew damn well was not the case.

O - “Oi, that’s not true. You should go home, get an actual restful night of sleep. We can handle Mr. Boot Licker.”

R - “Reducing yourself to glue feels so,” He paused, “Self deprecating. But still, glue can be a tricky thing. So many variables to make sure it’s a strong hold, that it keeps the intended items stuck together.”

E - “Extra cilantro,” He tossed one of the two burritos in his hands mumbling freak under his breath as the other man caught it with a small laugh, “Ah! There’s a bit a cheer. You need more sun. You coop yourself up far too much.”

D - Discarding one glass to a nearby waiter's tray, Matteo finished the other in a large gulp. The alcohol burning his throat, he grimaced for a second before thrusting the stim into his brother's hand. Who’s look of dismay only grew as the mans hand pried open the toddlers mouth, grabbed the candy and tossed it in the shrubbery behind him.

Familia Ante Omnia: Book 1

Family Above All. Matteo Sasso-Volcov was taught to uphold that value, that family was the most important aspect in one’s life. After the massacre of the Sasso’s there was no family worthy to hold to such a degree, if there had ever been to begin with. Treated as a second class member of the Volcov family and overworked, Matteo nears a breaking point. As the rug is lifted and the Volcov Bratva’s ill deeds against members is revealed, history begins to repeat. The once influential family within the New York Underworld turns on itself, brother against brother, son against father.

Happy Storyteller Saturday! What’s something small in your WIP that has way more meaning than it seems?

Ooo! That is such a good question.

I'm going to say Matteo's rivalry with his cousin Igor. It seems very petty at first but it's a lot deeper than it's led on to be. I won't go into too much detail but it really showcases how the younger members of the Volcov Bratva and family are raised to believe certain things which screams of a larger problem with in the family.
