The jaw-droppingly beautiful island you see here is 'Isola Superiore', also known 'Isola dei Pescatori' meaning 'Fishermen's Island' due to the historic work of its inhabitants. Set in the marvellous waters of Lake Maggiore, Isola Superiore is the only continuously-inhabited island of the Borromean Islands. It's made up of a small village, so small that only about 50 people live there year round, and characterised by a little square that's enclosed by narrow, winding alleys that lead to the promenade on the north tip of the island. The characteristic multi-storey homes were built to take advantage of the little space available; almost all of them have long balconies that are essential for drying fish. And as the name 'Isola dei Pescatori' suggests, fishing is still quite common and it's possible to taste succulent seafood in one of the several trattorias overlooking the lake. There's also a quaint little street market that sells local crafts and attracts crowds of tourists. A great deal of patience and a steady hand were definitely required to take this shot. I wanted the buoy to appear in the photo to emphasise how the island is isolated from all commercial activity. I also intended to capture the stillness and quietness of the lake, especially as it was low season in January.
