"Issak graduates today, the culmination of 12 years of hard work and dedication made even harder by the events of the last few weeks. The latest news remains the same: while the school board will allow him to wear a black robe, they will still call him by his legal name, citing that it’s the name that is listed on his diploma. And while I won’t get the chance to attend, I know that he will be cheered on by his family and his friends. They’ll shout his real name as he walked across the stage even when the school refused to acknowledge it and called him Sierra. And even though that day won’t be exactly what Issak intended it to be, even though it will marred by a school board that continually denies Issak’s right to be authentic and to be open, I know that Issak will do just that anyway. I’m sure that he will walk across that stage with his held head high because that’s the type of person that Issak is. Issak doesn’t walk away when things get tough. He doesn’t hide or look the other way. Instead he stares adversity straight in the face and says “you will not defeat me.”
