Thank you for the ask, @istolin! I had a little look at your profile for this.

Behind the cut: intense, dark subjects as Etienne mentally works through a variety of issues.

Could be that they’ve never met, and he’s just another pretty noble boy.

No matter how Etienne claims to love fancy dress and parties, there’s always a melancholy that flows into them when they find themselves alone watching everyone else. It isn’t precisely that they’ve been abandoned. Etienne broke off from their friends so the others could have their moments with handsome cowboys or daring journalists. Etienne promised they were excited to attend one of these things single for the first time in awhile - they could fill out their dance card. But they haven’t done that, they’ve found a spot to linger by the mulled wine. No, no.

Tea. They should just drink some tea.

There’s always a few people alone at these kinds of parties or at least people who are feeling alone. A pale face on the other side of the room seems a little familiar, and Etienne tries to recall if he was ever anything, if he was coins slipped into a sweaty palm in the Forgotten Knight or an earnest fuck by firelight, back when Etienne was a boy and constantly vomiting bad decisions into ill-timed alleyways.

So, how to approach that? I’ve had a lot of life changes, lately, I grew these tits, is usually how Etienne goes about it. Joking, because when it gets serious it hurts, and Etienne hates existing and breathing the air of people who will never understand it, who might nod in acceptance when their eyes register confusion or disgust, who are trying to do calculations of what it means, now, to look at the legs of Etienne. They don’t really care about the journey they tell Etienne they’re so brave for making, they’re trying to figure out if it changes anything for them. And Etienne’s always played that role, living solely in the lens of others’ opinion. They were a good place to hide confusion and excuses, a good person to lay blame on. Oh, they remember how that felt, even if they don’t remember every boy’s strangling hands his knives his angry mother and wife and shouting. They remember being different and hated, and now ironically they’re less so, with the dresses and ‘miladys,’ and it seems foolish to pretend they were ever anyone but who they are now. Still, Etienne has never been what anyone ever thought they were. Etienne still feels, for some reason, that folk are owed the truth, whatever the bloody hell that looks like. So. Jokes, comments on their body, because that is where they expect the curiosity mostly lays.

Not who they are, but who their body makes them in the eyes of the person they speak to.

Well.

Maybe just don’t talk to him, then. Could be that they’ve never met, and he’s just another pretty noble boy. They’re always so pretty, noble boys, with their hearts full of ice and fire and daddy issues and Halone issues and heresy on the weekends. They all think they invented torment and sadness, they all think they invented innocence and evil, they all think they have endured too much cruelty and sin, when all most of them are capable of is spurting it into others. They are not exquisite enough vessels for the crimes they wish they embodied. Their suffering is so embarrassingly inferior.

But Etienne loves noble boys so much. Etienne wants to fuck them all so much. Etienne wants to kill them all so much. They all have scars on their hearts and think they invented those, too. They’re prettier with the war trauma, so much prettier when they’re not all the way broken but Etienne can taste the blood and poison dripping from those knife-rasp wounds. But then there’s a bitter aftertaste of hatred that always returns Etienne to themselves. Self-loathing is delicious, but xenophobia gives them heartburn.

Etienne remembers they turned their back on the Church long ago and that’s a deal breaker for most of them. Etienne doesn’t fit, and men like that, until they don’t. They like that Etienne never craves Halone’s teat or these frozen gray streets until they don’t. They like that Etienne doesn’t give a shit what their mothers will say until they don’t.

 Hm. He’s pale. Snow is a little prettier with a ribbon or a velvet blanket. Or blood.

So have they met? Etienne recalls a name, Saillonaux, but why?

A silver tea set. Drink that, not mulled wine. Ah, right. They’re behaving. They’re not relapsing. They’re here to make a good impression.

Etienne catches him glancing, and raises a silver cup in a makeshift toast, smiling. Saillonaux tea, alright, that makes sense. He’s rich. That’s a good connection to make. That’s beneficial. That’s good business.

Maybe they fucked. Maybe they didn’t. Maybe neither of them remember, or he does and Etienne doesn’t, and it will be a game.

Etienne sticks out their tongue a little at him, playful - not seductive - before they chuckle, and take a sip.

Pretty boy, they call to him silently. It’s alright, come talk to me. Fill out my dance card.

• Duty Commenced: “Well now, there’s a pretty face.”  [Hadrian immediately gains the buff ‘Bullet Spray (and Other Euphemisms)’ whenever in a party with Istolin, which increases his Skill Speed by 10% -- and the debuff ‘Distracted’, which decreases Direct Hit Rate by 10%.] • Assisting: “Hang in there -- I’ll cover your back. You cover mine!” • Being Assisted: “--Theeeere y’are. Lovely ol’ show, inn’this?”  [Hadrian flashes the /biggrin expression for the remainder of combat.]

• Idle Banter I: “Now as I think of it, I might’ve bought your tea, once. Monstrous expensive stuff, but...” ... “What? A man can’t live on whiskey alone.”  [Hadrian uses the /huh emote.] • Idle Banter II: “Said you’re a bard o’ sorts, yeah? Mind teachin’ a man a new song?” • Idle Banter III: “Supposin’ we both survive this, I’d say a drink's in order. What’s your poison?”  [Dialogue options include >”A full-bodied whiskey.”, >”A fine, aged wine.” >"A light, crisp ale.”, and >”I don’t drink.” Hadrian pulls a nip from his flask and /grins at the first three replies, though that final option earns a “What?!” and an /aback.]

• KO: “What...? This? Just... a flesh wound...” • Revived: “What’n the hells...?!” ... “Oh, it’s you again! Hah -- bless your hide.”  [Hadrian /laughs. If revived by Istolin, he gains ‘Second Chances,’ a 5% buff to Defense for the rest of the duty.] • Witnessing Istolin KO: “Thal’s balls--! Goin’ it alone, then!”  [Hadrian engages his LB1 or LB2 as meter allows. The /endure expression persists until end of combat.] • Reviving Istolin: “Right then -- uuup y’get. This isn’t over ‘til it’s over, mate.”  [Hadrian hoists Istolin up off the ground by the collar of his shirt, and gives him a few hearty shakes.]

• Duty Completed: “Pff-hah! Looks like we make a fair decent team, me’n you! Now, about that drink...”  [Hadrian loses both buff/debuffs he gained initially, replaced by the buff ‘Swagger,’ which effects no change whatsoever on stats. The duty ends in a /vpose and a /flex. The brow-wiggle in it all is goddamn palpable.]

Please forgive him, @istolin. Hadrian is shameless. Thankfully, he has enough self-awareness to be also pretty harmless.

Something twisted in Chanai’s gut and slowly clawed its way from the depth of his chest that was buried in a place untouched for so long, he grew unfamiliar. Until now. Sympathy? Empathy? He swallowed it down best he could, but it was thick. As thick as the thrum in his chest that skipped a beat. Not because he felt sorry for the Elezen that rested his fear at his feet. 

Because the fear was once his very own.

The courtesan’s fingers, once hesitant, carded through snow-white locks with soothing ease once slipping out of bedsheets that haphazardly covered him and gently made the Elezan meet his gaze. The winter sun spilled white gold across the room and a strip along the unmade bed too bright for Chanai’s liking, but he could not - would not - leave this unsolved. He didn’t have all the answers, nor all the pieces of the puzzle to make sense of it all, but he knew fear when he saw it.  

“Have you lost sight of yourself along the way?”He asked, eyebrows furrowing into a gentle frown of silent concern.

Tiergan let out a low chuckle, moving to uncork something from a different bottle and pouring its bubbly contents out into a new glass. There was something fractured in his stare, as though another man entirely was pushing apart the fissures on surface shell to peer out at the asker and grin.  His smile was one that lacked mirth, his gaze filled instead with a dark, bitter sort of amusement.  

“A man or ...a weapon? Who knows?” The gladiator replied in a slow drawl. “I’ve spent so much time trying prove to myself I’m the former, but we all lie to ourselves and others at one point or another.

The Stormcaller knows this, I’m sure.”
