About “The Historian” (”Istoricul”) in half engleza half română
Istoricul is a novel about the chase of Dracula, or... Dracula chasing people, it depends of the context. Let me explain:
The main character, who has no name, finds an old book with nothing written on it but a huge xilogravură of a dragon (probabil din ordinul dragonului) which has a link with a two-side story: the one of professor Rossi, the one who starts the chasing, and the one of Paul and Helen, an historian and an anthropologist whom search for Rossi’s place when he dissapears and become part of this “Dracula hunting”.
Long story short: the descriptions of places and historical work is impecabil, as an historian I can tell the writer did a good job on researching (se pare că i-a trebuit zece ani să facă cercetările). Narrative has some issues, mostly because some chapters could have been deleted and the plot would be the same, and on the other side it has some unanswered questions like (SPOILER ALERT):
*How the heck Vlad got his head attached back to his body? Did it suffered some issues for being separated from the body for something about one or two months?
*How exactly Vlad became (da, this thing again) a VAMPIR? It is said there was some black, creepy witchy ritual behind but is never explained. Fail.
*How does Vlad can make a dude dissapear from his room in England to appear in Bulgary? No, seriously, is this a vampire power I didn’t know about?
*Isn’t he aware of Helen being his descendant? History doesn’t go very deep in real Vlad’s family relationships but I bet he would be interested on following his bloodline since, in this novel, he’s a (there’s no other word to describe it) huge nerd for History.
*What about the other “vampires”? The ones he created in order to manhunt the people he needed for his “evil plan” (BTW evil plan is having a personal assistant for his library... woooo diabolic).
*The “sultan’s order” prepared to chase him and avoid him of his “evil plan” is completely useless. Really, they can’t do a heck to help but provide some info to the main characters. And that’s it. Useless (anyway the only good thing is otomans aren’t portrayed as lovely heroes, at least not for too long).
*And the ending... Jesus Christ the ending was a magnificent piece of spurcăciune. De ce? De ce tu ai avut ce fă asta la papa Vlad?
I loved the book, even with the VAMPIR stuff in it (I mean, eu încă cred este o mai bun creatură fantastică pentru Vlad ar fi un balaur), but this lack of necessary info and the ending killed the experience for me.
