No, he’s not gone. The vessel shown was a flashback to 1901, when a bunch of angels came to Earth for a stupid reason that was not enough justification for the soft retcon (I’m actually okay with some retconning, if the story is good enough to justify it; I mean, Bobby involvement in the Winchesters’ childhood was a retcon, but it more than justified itself). The story was just kind of meh and repetitive, canon was FUBAR (but that’s par for the course these days), but the characterization and humor was pretty good. A solid C.

There’s some concern about Cas being put in a female vessel permanently (but that’s not new), and some of us have wondered if the choice to put Cas in a female vessel prior to Jimmy has anything to do with the “twist” Dabb promised to put on Gripping Tight and Raising Dean From Hell backstory and all the potential terrible implications of that (that they only did that because such an intimate scene between two men would be “too gay”, a concern which has altered story direction in the past). Misha did apparently say at Jaxcon that he did not like some of the upcoming Cas storyline, but that just might have to deal with the hot garbage fire that is the Lucifer’s Rape-Baby storyline. Somehow I don’t think Misha would appreciate Cas trying to force an abortion on Kelly, even if she is pregnant with Lucifer’s child through rape, which seems to be the direction this tire fire is spreading to.

Misha is still employed by SPN, Misha is still playing Cas indefinitely, AFAIK.
