You can't act like the game is lost before it is. This is, in fact, what they want you to do. They would love you to believe that nothing matters. Every time you roll over and do nothing, you are playing into what they would like you to do. They want you scared. They want you thinking it's already lost. You are giving them so much power.

If you want to live in your own doom slop, do. But scroll on past this and for the love of god shut the fuck up about it. Don't discourage people who are trying to do something.

And, know fucking what? I don't think that the ability to be won is the whole of the merit of the fight. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was unwinnable--was it stupid to fight? Did the guy in Tienanmen, standing in front of a row of tanks, fucking fix China? No! But I still think they were worth it, and that the people who did those things were better than those who didn't.

At the very least, you can give someone trying to ruin your fucking life a really bad day. Why would you not? I am happy to light up some intern on the phone every single day, and I hope they can't fucking sleep at night.

Screw your courage to the sticking place. It's been two fucking weeks. This is all a bunch of shock and awe bullshit, and we we CAN fight back, but we have to fucking do something. Internet activism, INCLUDING WHAT I AM DOING RIGHT NOW, is mostly useless. like 5% useful. Write a letter. Make a call. Go to a protest. Actually, you want to know what works really well? Learn what reps look like and if you see them in public, bully them. I just told a local government rep Tuesday I was 'real annoyed about this culture-war bullshit that i've never personally experienced, i gotta say, that you're wasting your time on while young people are fleeing the state. You grew up here. i grew up here. I do not think a net increase of Texans and East Coaster rhinestone cowboys are improving the place, do you? Focus on jobs and parks, jesus christ." And you know what? HE HATED IT. It was EMBARRASSING*. He just had to shrug and mutter that he did care about jobs but we go to the same gym! I didn't even yell! I said it with my usual flat "I'm unimpressed' affect.

Volunteer for the things you believe in! Run for fucking dogcatcher! Stop looking for an adult to do something. WE ARE THE ADULTS WHO HAVE TO DO SOMETHING, NOW.

*Some of this is you can't yell at a 5'3'' 125 pound women who's dressed like a tradwife. But you know how much YOU hate to be confronted in public? THEY DO TOO, GIRLIEPOP.

*deep sigh* Let's talk about the "3 fold law"

It must be Wicca bashing season since I'm seeing a resurgence of posts about how aweful wiccans are, and one of the cheif complaints is about the 3 fold law. How it is shameful towards abuse survivors, how there could never be such a thing as a 3 fold law because people have never experienced any blow back from melifica, and more. All this speaks to a lack of knowledge about where the 3 fold law originally came from. Which is okay, but it's time we learn our history if we're gonna talk about it.

Where does the 3 fold law come from?

The 3 fold law does have it's origins in Wicca, but it isn't a "law" within the religion the way it's discussed in online circles (based on my limited understanding of Wicca as a non-initiate). The 3 fold law as we know it today comes from Raymond Buckland trying to interpret Wiccan ethics in a way others can easily understand. Later in the 70s it appeared in poem written by Lady Gwen Thomas for Green Egg magazine. The piece was titled "Rede of the Wiccae" (which she attributed to someone else) which is where I think people get the idea that the rule of return is part of the Wiccan Rede and the religion's core tenants. When infact it's just a few people's interpretations of Wiccan morals and ethics.

Some suggest the rule of return in inspired by a line from one of Gardner's novels. In his book High Magic's Aid Gadner mentions how if you receive good you are to return it 3 fold. This is how I've heard some Wiccans explain the law of return to me over a decade ago, where it's less about the witches actions coming back 3 fold, and that instead the witch is responsible for returning someone's kindness or judgment back times 3. So different Wiccans understand the law of return differently.

So what exactly is the law of return?

To my understanding the 3 fold law is a suggestion that many Wiccans don't follow, but was made popular by a few who did believe in this idea. It's not really a "law" despite what the name suggests. And even as a suggestion it's still very open to interpretation. I invite any Wiccans (initiated or not) to chime in with what the law of return means to them and their practice, if it's even relevant. As they would be best to elaborate on this, as im not Wiccan and am speaking as an observer.

Essentially, to my understanding, the 3 fold law as it's commonly spoken about in online circles doesn't really exist in most people's practice. Im sure some people do apply it in their practice, but it's not as widespread as you might think. It's born from a misunderstanding, as well as from people taking fictional and poetic works as literal aspects of the religion.
