I am a proud and loud asexual. I take pride in spreading asexual awareness to the people that surround me. But we (aromantics too) desperately need more representation in media.
To me, one of the hardest aspects of being asexual was realizing it was a thing. Because how do you figure out you're lacking something you've never experienced? How does one know they don't feel romantic/sexual attraction when you don't know what it feels like? How do you find out it's normal if no one talks about it? How are we supposed to accept ourselves if people keep saying we're broken? That the right person will eventually fix us? People confuse celibacy with asexuality and aromanticism is just "you haven't met the one" How could they not think that way? We're not even acknowledged by the LGBTIQ+ community most of the times.
We're constantly told that we're not deserving of love if we can't fix ourselves, because "it's not fair to the other person!" And they don't even bother to listen when we say it's a spectrum and that we all experience asexuality in different ways. They put us all on the same bag and one experience suddenly defines us all.
It's not even a "we want more representation" it's a "we NEED it", so the young ones know that there's nothing wrong with them and they're not "too young to know", so the the grown ones realize they're not the only ones that feel that way. We need representation because we need to be heard and seen. We need to stop being ridiculed and being told we're missing something. We're not broken, we're not weird and we're fucking tired.
Give us representation. And garlic bread. Thank you. End of rant.
