Chapter 20 of The Least You Can Do
A couple people replied to my post about Voltron yesterday so I might actually finish the story… maybe… If I continue at the rate I was working on it before, it might be done by….. August 2028?
let us not forget that Troy and Abed were manipulated into turning against each other by Vice Dean of Air Conditioning Repair Annex. even then, their tension didn’t become a war until Alex Osbourne threw a pillow because the dean called him Starburns. let the record reflect that Jeffrey “I can take on any position to suit my purpose” Winger egged them on to keep the fight going, just to blow off school. and even then, when everyone else thought it was all over, they kept pillow fighting because it would be the last thing they do together. the history will remember that their love for each other inspired Jeff Winger to go back to the dean’s office to bring back their magic friendship hats. Troy and Abed will persevere against all odds and outside manipulations.
sailing around the world takes 3-5 years apparently. Troy completed his voyage and he has been back with Abed for the past several years
Troy and Abed- One shot: Pride parade-
“Are you ready?” Troy exclaimed from the apartment doorway.
“Yeah” said Abed, striding out of his room and slinging his shoulder bag over his shoulder.
Before he could step through the doorway, Troy stopped him in his tracks.
“Are you sure you want to go?” he asked, clearly concerned. “I know you don’t like crowds, and I don’t want you to have a bad time. I can call Brit—”
“Don’t worry. I brought everything I need,” he said, pointing to his shoulder bag. “Besides, you said the same thing about the Inspecticon, and it turned out to be a great day.”
Troy raised his eyebrows, recalling that bittersweet day.
"Yes, that right" he whisper. "Okay, here we go" said finally open up the door.
It didn't take long for the couple to spot their friends in the crowd of people waiting excitedly at 5 p.m., when Pride was set to begin.
“Guys!” Britta called out from a distance, waving her hand. When they approached the group, Britta didn't hesitate to give Abed a hug.
“Are you excited?” she said joyfully. They just nodded. “That's the spirit,” she said, making a small gesture to encourage them.
Suddenly, the group of people leading the demonstration interrupted Britta's monologue, asking for permission to pass.
“Ah! I almost forgot,” Britta exclaimed as she watched them walk by, surprising Abed. The blonde set her bag down on the ground and pulled some flags out of it. “Here are your flags.”
Britta had taken it upon herself to get the different flags for her group of friends. Some, like Annie's, were small pennants—which she thought were cuter (and also more discreet)—and others, like Jeff's, were as long as a cape.
Troy accepted his little blue-and-green-striped flag with a shy smile, waving it gently, and—after a long time and many prejudices—felt at peace with himself.
Annie found that gesture endearing. When their eyes met, she smiled and waved her pink-and-orange-striped flag slightly as well.
Suddenly, a thunderous noise filled the area. That unexpected sound—loud and repetitive—made them both lower their flags and turn their gaze toward the drums, signaling the start of the march.
“Thanks.” Abed grabbed his flag, admiring the three horizontal stripes—pink, purple, and blue. He felt the texture of the polyester in his hand. In his daily life, he didn't usually have a problem with the textures of fabric, only at times when he was overstimulated.
Britta approached Abed, who had spent nearly half a minute staring blankly at the flag. Together with the group, they moved to the side of the street so as not to disturb the crowd.
“Are you okay?” her friend asked, tapping her on the shoulder to get her attention.
Abed looked up, nodding, and glanced around.
“Really?” Even though Britta still had a hard time understanding some of Abed's behavior, she wanted to make sure her friend was okay.
Abed nodded again.
“Cool. Cool, cool, cool.”
He abruptly handed his flag to Britta, who took it, looking a little confused. Abed opened his shoulder bag, catching Troy’s attention.
He rummaged through his things, fidgeting.
“They’re not here,” he said, searching again to make sure. He didn’t want to alarm the group; he knew he could keep the situation under control despite feeling pressure in his chest and a tingling sensation running through his limbs. Even though his tone of voice was monotone, Troy was the one who noticed his concern and nervousness.
“My noise-canceling earplugs—they're gone,” he finally said, covering his ears as he looked at Troy, who could see the pain on his face caused by the thunderous drumbeat.
Everyone in the group imitated Abed, so Troy felt all their eyes on him.
He closed his eyes, clearing his thoughts. Although he could feel the weight of everyone’s gaze on him, he drew on every ounce of courage from the depths of his heart to handle the unexpected situation.
“Go with the rest of them,” he told them as he grabbed his boyfriend around the waist. “I’ll take care of Abed.”
“But—”
Before Britta could say anything, Jeff grabbed her hand and shook his head. She got the message. She knew she could trust Troy.
After walking for a few minutes, the drums fell silent, allowing Abed to lower his hands.
“Is this better?”
Abed simply nodded. Troy noticed how he was stretching and flexing his fingers and rotating his neck, trying to release all the built-up muscle tension.
Troy rested his hand on his leg, nodding. He stood up and sighed.
"Am I a burden?”
Without warning, he felt his heart break. He frowned, taken aback by that question. How much must he have suffered in his life to think that way? What kind of people had he had to live with?
His sadness mingled with anger as he thought about it all. But he couldn’t let himself feel that way because of stupid people. Abed was the priority. He was the one who needed to hear his words. He looked within himself, channeling his emotions, weaving with words the safety net that Abed so desperately needed.
"Don't think that way. Yes, maybe sometimes you don't act like everyone else, and sometimes we might think you're a little weird, but I want you to know for sure that you're not a burden to
us. You never have been, and you never will be. Yes, loud noises or sudden changes might bother you… but that’s part of who you are. And really, if you’ve found people who love you and appreciate you, interrupting a social event for your well-being should be the least of your worries."
Abed looked him in the eyes, giving him a crooked smile in gratitude for his words. They truly felt like a band-aid on his chest.
They waited on a bench until Abed regained control of his body.
Britta texted Troy.
She was worried, but she still gave them their space, so instead of bombarding them with questions, she simply sent updates every time the march turned onto a new street, in case they wanted to head back.
“We should go back,” Abed said, glancing sideways at Britta's latest message.
“Yeah... we should...” Troy replied thoughtfully. “I'll be right back,” he said, getting up from the bench. “Don't move.”
Abed took that last sentence literally. And he didn’t move a millimeter, as if he were a statue.
A few minutes later, he looked over at Troy again, who was running toward him with something in his hands.
“This...” Troy tried to speak as he caught his breath, and handed Abed a small bag. “This is for you.”
Abed raised his eyebrows curiously.
From the bag, he pulled out a chocolate milkshake—Troy had bought it for him to cheer him up. At the bottom of the bag was the most important thing: a small box. He held it in his hands and read:
“noise-canceling earplugs.”
He looked into Troy’s eyes in disbelief.
“I know the quality isn't as good as the ones you have at home, but I hope they'll do.”
Abed eagerly opened the box. He didn't care if they weren't the best on the market. He had learned to appreciate the little things, and he would definitely never forget this one.
When he put them on, he jumped to his feet, grabbing Troy’s hand—Troy, who hadn’t expected such enthusiasm from him.
Just like in a movie with a happy ending, the two of them walked through the streets until they easily spotted their friends in the crowd.
“Thank goodness you're here,” Annie said with relief, hugging Abed.
“What about Britta?” Troy asked.
Annie simply pointed to the front of the march; they weren't quite sure how she'd gotten there, but from the way she was chanting, it was clear this wasn't her first protest.
“I think you're going to need this,” Jeff said, handing Abed his flag back.
“I want to wear a cape, too,” Abed joked when he saw that Jeff had his blue, pink, and white horizontally striped flag tied around his neck.
Troy handed his little flag to Jeff, who tucked it away, leaving his hands free to tie the flag around Abed’s neck.
When he finished tying it, Troy looked up and their eyes met. They both smiled, and Abed leaned forward and gave him a little kiss as a thanks.
Even though they’d been dating for months, when their lips parted, Troy couldn’t help but feel his cheeks flush.
Jeff nodded, giving them some privacy, and Annie couldn’t help but watch them with a tender smile, feeling a sweet warmth in her chest. They were the reason she still believed in love.
Still feeling the rush of the kiss, Troy turned his back on Abed.
“You know that if you have a cape, it means you can fly.”
He didn't have to say anything else for Abed to get the message, and with a single leap, Abed climbed onto his back, riding him piggyback.
And with their heads held high and full of pride, they joined in Britta's chantings.
"When queer rights are under attack, stand up, fight back!"
“Hey ho, hey ho, homopohbiah's got to go!"
“We're here, we're queer, get used to it!”
