Rick Mitchell is a good husband and father for making the sacrifice to give up his lifelong dream, his hand-built wooden cabin, for the benefit of his family. He is also a human being, and that is an incredible personal sacrifice, and he is an incredible human being for making that sacrifice - for choosing the responsibility of his role as Husband And Father over the individual happiness of his Personhood. And that's the movie (part of it) - our parents are people too, and we often aren't aware of sacrifices they've made because we see them as parents first and people second (and this is natural as children have never lived without their parents being their parents).
