i wear a nametag at work that reads "jules" and occasionally i'll get people asking if it's short for anything. today, when i responded to the man who asked by saying that yes, my full name is julia, he told me that it was a lovely name (which i agreed with by talking about caeser naming his daughter julia bc i thought it was cheeky and maybe he'd take my bait and discuss ancient roman (if not patriarchal) naming conventions with me, but no dice..). he pushed on by saying that he misses girls having girl names... like i must obviously agree with him despite my clear choice to have put the *less feminine* version of my name on my name tag.

i responded something intelligable like "idk i really like names like carter for girls" but inside i was screaming and clawing, just dying for the chance to explain exactly why that sentiment (a) makes no sense, (b) is reeking of misogyny, and (c) actually feels somewhat inappropriate when for all intents and purposes my name to you, the customer, is jules. clearly my full name is not what i choose to be called so why are you identifying me with it and pushing me into some girly box i don't belong in for your own satisfaction?
