I just wanted to include this, because I love to think of these two as friends. If you leave out the drama that my headcanon brought to these two over Luna, they’re actually perfect as friends.
And Barnaby deserves to be around good Slytherins... way better than Merula and Ismelda, that’s for sure.

Let’s ignore the fact that Merula’s toxic behavior is probably rooted in years of abuse and twisted education, and instead of helping her become a better person and free her from the negative environment that taught her that the only way to get anywhere in life is being the worst person she’s able to be; let’s just excuse her behavior by saying she’s making MC a better and stronger person.

This is exactly why some people hate Merula. Not because she’s flawed, but because JC glorify her negative traits and lazily throwing her into the plot with stupid excuses, instead of a true character development.
You’re not doing any favors to her character, you’re just making her way less likeable and alienating the people that would actually like to forgive her at some point.
