people who write fics. how do you feel about comments on super old ones you wrote like 2+ years ago
Bringing this out of the tags:
A fic written 2 years ago is NOT OLD. Two years is nothing. Two years ago was yesterday.
Also I don't care if a fic is 10 years old. Leave those comments!! Even if you think the author isn't active, or moved on from the fandom, I promise you it will make them smile.
I commented on a fic that was 11 years old, and there was already a response by the time I got up the next morning. Comment on the fics, please, comment on them, I promise it'll make the author's day either way
I got a comment on a fic of mine this week that just read "TWO THOUSAND AND NINE?"
I replied to it within seconds, of course. someone commented on my fic
As @pentapoda put it in this post:
(transcript: Every time someone comments on my old fic, i feel like I'm an old actor getting paid residuals. Appreciate you, old-fic-commenters. Key source of emotional income, tbh.)
GO LEAVE NICE COMMENTS ON FICS!!! It's motivation for us!!
New Wave of Smut Censorship on Wattpad & Google Docs
Reasons why writing with a pencil/pen on paper still makes sense today.
Someone still loves you & loves having you around. You brighten someone's day without realizing it sometimes. Whether that someone is a human or a pet is for you to decide, but regardless, YOU MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY EVERY DAY!
ever since the early 2000s when a couple brain-dead frat boys on campus said "Cute skirt" at me and giggled, I've worn kilts pretty much every day
because to hell with the delicate gender-enforcing losers who don't understand the origins of kilts, to hell with people sticking their noses into other people's choices, and to hell with the whole notion of gendered clothing
Kilts are worn by many cultures in the international community & even among us Americans, especially at Scottish & Irish festivals, you'll find men wearing kilts. It seems it's the "I didn't wanna pay attention in history class" idiots came after this proud dad for wearing something that most think only a woman can wear & dare call it a "skirt" because they failed to learn what a KILT is!
Let this be a call to all the proud dads of school children to wear their kilts with pride this school year when dropping off & picking up their kiddos!! The last thing the school districts expect are the dads coming out to defend their kids & themselves because usually, all they deal with are the moms. They tend to blow us moms off, but the minute the dads step in? They shut their fucking mouths real quick! Dads can break bones with one fist to the face & they hit harder than the mamas.
Firebending Kai - Azula style :D
OMG
Dranzer, his bit beast, is a phoenix, so Kai having the ability to firebend per Dranzer is certainly doable. This is season 1 Kai in the animation above, but his aggressive attitude from the first season fits Azula's firebending style perfectly as he was also raised by a cruel man.
Season 2 & 3 versions of Kai would most likely see him switch from Azula's style of firebending to Zuko's style since he does love animals, learns how to better get along with others & eventually does retake his place as leader in season 3 by his last battle.
Kai has the best of both Azula & Zuko in him, but like Zuko.... he chooses his friends over his cruelest family members. ♥
There isn't a better time or place than right now.
Fam deadnaming one (or more) of the trans relatives? The trans relatives have every right to stop going to family events with those deadnaming members & cut them out of their lives entirely due to disrespect being dealt to them! Sometimes a mental ass whooping works better than a physical & verbal one honestly & every person has the right to refuse service to those that disrespect them!
Your body is your business & your business includes the right to refuse service to anyone that is being rude to you!!! Remember that!
I think it's really important to point out one of the major flaws in that highway analogy:
Eminent domain requires payment.
The government cannot come in and merely seize your land under eminent domain and pay you nothing. There is a process & they have to pay you market value for your land and the buildings on it. A couple of my former clients went through this about 15 years ago when the 202 Bypass went through in Montgomery & Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Their houses and land were taken via eminent domain so that the highway could be built, but, I need to say this again: they were paid.
They were paid and there was a process in which they were informed ahead of time. They didn't just drive home one day and find out their home had been snatched, too bad, so sad, no money for you, you should have put your house in a bank vault.
Just taking someone's shit like that without compensation has a name, and it's not eminent domain or anything like it:
It's fucking theft.
(I'm not interested in hearing the same tired shit about how copyright is inherently bad and only protects corporations, because as someone who deals with protecting my livelihood from scammers and scrapers via copyright every goddamned day, this isn't a fun mental exercise/philosophical debate for me, and you're absolutely wrong. Fucking save it for someone ignorant enough and with time to waste on that.)
The highway argument is also disingenuous in that ignores the very real harms caused by the systems that decide which neighborhoods to target and who precisely is going to be displaced. From numerous historically black neighborhoods being demolished to farmers being displaced and left with no livelihood. There has been a great deal of harm done in the name of public good. https://historyfortomorrow.org/story/eminent-domain-and-the-displacement-of-black-communities/ https://thenarrativematters.com/eminent-domains-devastating-impact-on-communities-of-color/
https://www.condemnation-law.com/blog/general-eminent-domain/farm-land-and-eminent-domain/ https://www.vermontpublic.org/programs/2019-10-29/interstates-burning-farms-eminent-domain-remembering-romaine-tenney
There have long been worries about the abuse of eminent domain, and the AI scraping model is far closer to the abusive aspects of eminent domain than any supposed public good aspect. https://ij.org/issues/private-property/eminent-domain/eminent-domain-history/ https://www.purdybailey.com/blog/2020/january/5-famous-cases-of-eminent-domain-abuse/
Anytime someone brings up an argument that states something is for the greater good, always ask yourself "for whose greater good?" Who benefits most, who gets harmed the most, what are the actual harms when you think through the logistics and future implications of the harms and not just the immediate harm, is there remuneration for the harm being caused, is it sufficient?
These are all things that must be asked before proceeding with any so called public works plan. Anyone who tells you otherwise is scamming you.
Oh, completely agreed. I only didn't go that far bc, like, you don't even need to before the argument entirely falls apart. But yeah, if people don't know about how eminent domain has been used to destroy Black neighborhoods in particular, they should read up and ask the questions.
A thief is a THIEF & thieves must be locked up & punished accordingly! All the artists that had their work stolen by the data scrapers should have every right to demand compensation for every work stolen & have their art removed from the AI dataset by law!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is another reason why I prefer buying things handmade in a physical form. You art should be respectfully hanging in a house, in a picture frame, on the wall & in a place where everyone who visits can see & admire your masterpiece!! .
A fully private training facility to where Uryu can unleash as much power as he wants & train against the Vasto Lordes, like Nelliel, without worrying about hurting innocents.
The most dazzling of coats that accentuate his height.
His own house with whatever he desires in it. (Seto actually lets Uryu move into the mansion so he doesn't really need his own place, but said private house for Uryu is a vacay spot that he likes.)
shut up you pretentious millenial everyone knows about grasshopper mouse
god I love Tumblr you just don’t get hate mail like this on other websites
Pfftttt... now re-write that in cursive on paper with an ink pen. Not every millennial can do that & make it legible.
having used tumblr as a teenager is a vaccination against using tiktok today
i realize you’re probably half-joking but legitimately having this level of control over what i see on my dash and not having the popularity of my posts determined by The Algorithm makes using tiktok feel like my body is fighting a Disease
Spacing words out properly for tagging is nicer than looking like a run-on sentence is cool too.
you used to be able to get a job just by circling a listing in a newspaper in red pen
Make physical media cool again by putting job listings in the newspapers & posting them at the library.
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
Up until you have a reverse installed doorknob, that works. No theft on left, open sight on right would be the reverse of the above for me.
Hey. If people aren't aware, Microsoft admitted they know who you and where you are at all times and will give your info to the police.
They have a Global Device Identifier (GDID) Tracker that functions as a fingerprint for your PC that can surpass VPNs, proxy servers and countries. Although it can't survive a clean reinstall of Windows (it can survive updates), because Microsoft forces you to go to the internet and log in into a Microsoft account, they will be able to get to you.
Microsoft kept it secret and it was only found out when the FBI tracked a hacker thanks to the information Microsoft gave them.
You should be paying attention to this, and possibly consider moving away from Windows. If a government, especially the US government, doesn't like you for some reason, this could be seriously concerning.
This article specifically notes:
For journalism, activism, or domestic abuse situations, skip Windows and use Linux routed through Tor instead of a commercial VPN. A GDID doesn’t care which VPN you use, only that it’s still the same Windows installation.
GDID is the persistent Windows ID that helped FBI trace a Scattered Spider hacker despite VPNs. Here's how it works and how to limit it.
Other important quotes:
What has researchers uneasy is everything else the case reveals. Costin Raiu, a well-known malware researcher, asked on the Three Buddy Problem podcast how much of this exists on other platforms, and whether it is linked more permanently to hardware. Matthew Hickey, another security researcher, called Windows “surveillance software”.
Two things back that up:
There’s no consent screen. A GDID gets assigned when you sign into a Microsoft Account. Apple’s advertising identifier needs an App Tracking Transparency prompt and a visible reset; Android’s works the same way. GDID has neither, and a Windows reinstall only gets you a new number Microsoft can still get back to the same account.
Then there’s activation. Massgrave, the group behind Microsoft Activation Scripts, notes that Windows setup sends hardware info to Microsoft and gets identifiers back, the same tokens later used for Store access and licensing: “It’s impossible to prevent Windows from getting a GDID without breaking activation and UWP app[s].” Anyone who lost a license after swapping a motherboard has already met a smaller version of this.
Here's the complaint filed to the court, the primary source for the case mentioned in the article. You can find mentions of GDID on page 30 of the document or 34 of the PDF.
Thank you @just-call-me-zinnia for finding it!
Somebody gonna break that GDID tracker in the OS to where it can’t be put back…. dunno who, but there’s somebody on this planet capable of it.
uninstall adobe acrobat. it is malware. it has been malware. these aren't opinions: acrobat meets the definition of malware.
it installs a user-login-time "startup" executable that ignores any windows directives to disable it on startup. doing so only removes the even-more-malicious taskbar-icon-creating advertisement-notification-creating process. no matter what you do, the sleeper "updater" process starts when you log in, and runs perpetually
it sends & receives encrypted network traffic both periodically and non-periodically. both are bad, both are suspicious, and a program doing both is more suspicious than the sum of their parts. and to boot: acrobat will polymorphically edit its code after such network activity
this isn't new: it has always done this. now, it does not even do the thing it is meant to: provide a way to interact with documents, which is amongst the very first features computers were built to provide. you can merely open PDFs and read some of their content in the narrow space between the requests for adobe to give them your money, and interface for features you cannot use (because you don't) or do not, have not, and will not ever need
adobe and microsoft would very much like the user's cultural norms around computers to allow for advertisement built into the local software and even operating system itself. the web being 100% advertisements was not enough! sure enough, acrobat will hijack the windows notifications system thing to give you the 2026 equivalent of pop-ups
i don't really know enough about windows software equivalents, so i'll paypal $20 to the first person that reblogs this with a list of 3-5 PDF reader/editor/etc acrobat equivalents that meet the following criteria:
open source, locally-built executables must match checksum of prebuilt distributed executable
no paid features/premium version/subscription/whatever
not a toy hobby project thing, must be windows-users-proof
cheers
Firefox's built-in PDF.js viewer: does everything you could want from a basic viewer, fast enough search, and can now do annotations for filling in forms and such
KDE Okular: is a decent viewer and can also do basic annotations, and is so not-a-toy that you can even download it on the Windows app store.
LibreOffice Draw: I don't ever really like having to open this but if you have to edit a PDF in detail it does work, and doesn't just vomit up a bunch of polygons when you give it text to work with. Better as an authoring tool than an editor.
I've 100% replaced free acrobat with the firefox built-in and it works wonderfully for general office use and research/reading/viewing. It doesn't have robust redaction capabilities, but if you need to fill and sign and highlight a form it's actually much more intuitive than acrobat reader.
Firefox just be winning at the game no matter what for the most part.
