Yes, you either live at home or they let you stay in a service unit, which means sharing a tiny flat with 7 other people doing national service with you. In the army you get paid less than 100 pounds a month (450 NIS, when 100 quid is about 600 NIS) and in National service you get 1500 a month (so about 250 pounds). Your minimum wage is 8 pounds an hour? Dude, I earn now almost times 1.5 minimum wage and I make 5 pounds an hour.
At the moment I think it’s £6.50-ish but it’s supposed to go up to £8.00 by either next year or the year after? We are trying to get it up to the ‘living wage’ thing and because poverty is so high (still) we want to fix that. But that sounds really cool. I’ve always thought some sort of national service would be good for my country - not forced conscription to the army, because I’m like an uber pacifist - but you have to serve the country in some way for like a year or two. I think it would work best that you could opt in to it either post-18 (after A-levels) or post-degree? So you can put it off for as long as you’re in education.
And I don’t know how much your rent costs and stuff but my rent - and keep in mind that I live in quite a poor/cheap area - is £433 a month. So you’d need like, 1.75 times the national service pay (ish) to be able to afford my rent. And if you earn £5 an hour you’d have to work like 20 hours just for rent (my rent is £100 a week). Sooooo what are your rent rates like? Could I afford to live in Israel?
