5 places to visit on the Amalfi Coast
By Scarlett of Petite Suitcase
The Amalfi Coast is one of the most beautiful places in Italy sometimes it is hard to choose where to visit during your vacation. Some may only have a week to enjoy the best breathtaking views, sites, and food. That is why as a local ex-pat living in Campania, I thought I would share the places enjoy visiting during my summer months here in Southern Italy.
1. Naples
It’s the city everyone loves to hate, but the truth is you should absolutely stop in Naples. Even if you’re purely motivated purely by pizza and access to the Amalfi Coast, that’s reason enough to at least spend the day there. It’s truly a concrete jungle and there’s no other city like it. Whether you’re there for just a few hours on the way to the port or a week, pizza is mandatory.
Have your own Eat, Pray, Love moment and have pizza at L’Antica Pizzaeria da Michele, or head to Starita or Sorbillo’s for a pizza that will equally make you want to “get some bigger jeans” as Julia Roberts would say. I also love a sweet treat and a caffé from the historic Gran Caffé Gabrinus near the Piazza del Plebisbito. From the port, you can easily take ferries or trains to Capri, Sorrento, Procida or Ischia.
2. Procida
The smallest of the islands in the bay of Naples is Procida. For a walk through a pastel waterfront, be sure to head over to the Marina Corricella where buildings and boats are the colorful tones of Easter skittles. Procida is mostly untouched by the modern tourism that you’ll see over on its neighbor island of Capri, but it still has one shuttle that runs the length of the 2-mile long island.
3. Ischia
Ischia is the place to be during August when Italians flock to the beach and escape the heat of the city. Of course, in true Italian style, the whole family is invited. Beaches are filled with families vacationing and soaking up the sun. Ischia is also home to several elaborate thermal spas like Giardini Poseidon Terme and Negombo if you prefer a pool to the beach.
4. Positano
Positano is one of the most famous towns along the Amalfi Coast. Photos of the iconic cliffside covered in charming apartments and hotels have probably popped up on your Pinterest feed, but what you might not have heard is how friendly the locals are.
I’ve once had a restaurant owner sit at our table and tell us about how that was the last weekend he’d be open for the season because the very spot we were sitting at would be underwater soon. Looking up from the beach or straight on from a boat, Positano is photogenic from all angles.
5. Sorrento
I’ve visited Sorrento in different seasons, and I love seeing how this small town transforms. In the winter oceanfront restaurants may be closed, but you can still smell the faint fragrance of basil and carbs wandering through alleys as locals cook their midday Sunday meal from home. In the summer, it’s only natural to take a spot under an umbrella on the crowded pier and cool off with a swim in the Mediterranean or a scoop of gelato… or both.

How Traveling Europe Opens Your Eyes
By Mary Grace Shelly
The routines we follow in our everyday lives have a silent way of becoming comfortably concrete. We get too busy, too tired, or too distracted to place importance on the little things in life that keep our minds awake and our souls inspired. I found myself feeling this way during my junior year of college, and spending a semester traveling Europe changed my life more than I could possibly have imagined. The possibilities endless, but here are just a few of the ways that traveling Europe opens your eyes to the world around you.
"It is a humbling experience to connect with people who live in places and cultures that seem so far outside the realm of your personal world."
There is something special about the people you meet when you travel. It is a humbling experience to connect with people who live in places and cultures that seem so far outside the realm of your personal world. I conversed with people with whom I shared no common language, and I observed people whose normal lifestyle was foreign to mine in every way.
The sweet woman who sold me handmade bracelets that I brought home to my sister, the compassionate man that helped me find my way when I was lost; these people broke down the barriers between us and made me remember that even with all the bad things happening in the world, there is still overwhelming goodness in humanity.
The food in Europe is another truly integral part of the entire experience. The smells and tastes are as much a part of exploration as the sights are. Trying new flavors and cuisine from places all over the world makes the experience of travel so authentic and enriching. Simply put, good food is just good for the soul.
"Not only observing, but living the lifestyles and traditions of other people is so important, both for learning about the world and learning about yourself."
Immersing yourself in different cultures is the most important part of having an authentic and eye opening experience abroad. Luckily, meeting people and trying new things (like amazing food), are two really great ways to do this.
Not only observing, but living the lifestyles and traditions of other people is so important, both for learning about the world and learning about yourself. It brings new perspectives and broadened understandings, and it helps you reflect on your own life to make positive changes in your ideas, your lifestyle, and your happiness.
Traveling starts out as an exploration of what is outside your comfort zone. It is getting on a plane, going to a new place, trying new things, learning new languages, and seeing new sights.
"But somewhere along the way, when our eyes are opened to the beauty in the world, travel becomes a journey of self-reflection, an experience that allows us to see clearly through the fog that builds up in our everyday lives and come to better understandings about who we are, what we love, and how we want to live. Women Travel Talks: Lingua & Cucina Founder, Lee DeMilo!
Lee DeMilo, founder of Lingua and Cucina, is another inspiring Italian woman for TIS! We were lucky enough to have Lee tell us her story about moving to America while still maintaining a connection to her Italian heritage.
Immigration can cause you to get lost in a new way of life and forget your roots. That is simply not the case with founder of Lingua and Cucina, Lee DeMilo, who outright refused to abandon her Italian heritage. Instead, she has built a life around cherishing and spreading the Italian culture that remains so dear to her decades after leaving her home, San Lorenzello. Her story in America isn’t without struggle, but each challenge has been met head on with equal parts endurance and hard work - an attitude she developed long ago on her family’s olive groves in the beautiful San Lorenzello countryside.
From an early age, Lee was instilled with a strong work ethic and a sense of responsibility. Coming from a large family with strict parents, Lee always felt a sense of obligation to do well in school and in performing her daily household chores. Lee explains it best when she said, “the real life began early on for me.” Fittingly, looking back at her childhood, her best memories were around the dinner table. It was a time when her family could forget all their trouble, be together, and enjoy a delicious meal while her father looked on with pride.
Once settled in her new life in America, Lee maintained the values of hard work and determination she learned in Italy. She received scholarships to Quinnipiac University and was able to graduate magna cum laude. The biggest test of those values came in 2001 when her husband and her decided to purchase a historic house made with sheetrock in Connecticut - a decision that almost cost Lee her life. In time, Lee came to discover that she was allergic to sheetrock and had developed an autoimmune disease that would force her to quit her job and keep her bedridden. As doctors struggled to find a solution, Lee struggled with maintaining her sense of self. The side effects of the prescribed medication began to turn her into a different person. In order to survive, Lee had to go back to her roots. Through eating organic foods like she had when she was growing up in Italy as well as taking up the Japanese healing technique of reiki, Lee was able to reconnect with her inner self and get better. Out of this experience, Lingua and Cucina was born.
"It’s a place where you called everyone your aunt or uncle and neighbors were calling from balconies for extra garlic at lunchtime. A place where performing simple tasks for one another wasn’t questioned or delayed and friendships became long lasting support systems."
When asked why it has been so important for her to maintain her Italian culture, Lee begins by painting a picturesque picture of the community she knew in San Lorenzello. It’s a place where you called everyone your aunt or uncle and neighbors were calling from balconies for extra garlic at lunchtime. A place where performing simple tasks for one another wasn’t questioned or delayed and friendships became long lasting support systems. It’s these values that has kept Lee so connected to her Italian heritage and eager to pass along to her students. She believes that if her students want to learn the Italian language, it’s imperative that they must first learn the culture. Lee thoroughly accomplishes this task by creating real world scenarios for her students to interact in and providing delicious organic meals from the region they’re currently studying. Her students will come out learning that in Italy, especially in the business world, a handshake means so much more than a signature or a lunch will get you much further than a simple phone call.
"She believes that if her students want to learn the Italian language, it's imperative that they must first learn the culture."
For those traveling to Italy with Travel Italian Style, Lee offers this popular suggestion “When in Rome, do what the Romans do.” She encourages visitors to watch what the locals are doing and follow suit, placing importance in travelers to gain a real, authentic experience.
Lee looks back at her struggles as learning experiences. She believes that she had to “learn her own lessons the hard way” and has become a stronger person from it. That’s why she offers this advice, “If you take the challenge and pursue it, when you over it, you become a different person with a much broader view and will expect more out of life.”
"If you take the challenge and pursue it, when you over it, you become a different person with a much broader view and will expect more out of life."
Lingua e Cucina is a modern, personal and entertaining way to learn Italian and a building bridge for Italian and American companies to create partnerships and strategically market Italian products and services in the U.S. You can find more about Lee and her work with Lingua e Cucina here: http://www.linguaecucina.com
